Selling a coin on ebay: Large scans or small scans?

If you were a seller, why in the world wouldn't you want to have the largest possible scans available? I mean, if you're selling a high dollar coin, for instance, and you tout the coin as being super-cherry, and say everyone should believe you and trust you that the coin is super, why not have large scans to prove it??? Instead of saying, "trust me, the coin's better than the scan!" Why oh why wouldn't you have large scans?

Unless you're trying to hide something maybe??

Just a thought.

OK, that's one good reason. But it seems like a poor excuse, especially on a $500 or $1500 coin.

If it is a high dollar coin I include a large and small scans. I warn the user as to the size of the larger scan. The large scan is on my WEB page adn I just provide a link.

With some sellers, that is the case. But many have smaller scans because they use eBay's picture service and don't want to pay for the supersize option.

a bit of enlargment is ok, but those humongous super-large digi-pics are stupid for the same reason it's stupid to try & grade a coin under a microscope. what good is it to see a coin 20x actual size? that looks totally unlike the coin in-hand. 3x or 4x is plenty.

Karl, I agree. I guess I should have stated some sort of reference point. Let's say a coin that maxes at 50KB, like the limit here on the boards. That gives a coin about the same size as the monitor screen, which I find more than adequate.

I see so many ebay auctions where the coin depicted is so small it's essentially worthless in ascertaining the condition of the coin. And how can a seller expect maximum bucks when the coin isn't even shown properly? It seems like you're just shooting yourself in the foot. Or head.

I agree with you, I can't remember how many coins I've passed over because of crappy pictures! I add supersized pictures for high $ coins & sometimes, I add supersized pictures to show damage & wear to coins I'm selling.
I haven't been selling long on eBay but I've learned one important thing PICTURES, PICTURES, PICTURES!!!!

    Thanks Glenn!

Flaminio, that's what I'm talking about, except I don't see the need to have so much duplication. The seller has not one, but 3 sets of pictures. Perhaps that's why it takes a while to download. Notice the auction already has 27 bids, too!

  • If I were a seller, I would want the potential bidders to have the best description I could give them. That includes the pictures.
I wonder if some sellers aren't limited by their equipment, and their ability to use it to it's full potential.
I've often times had sellers email me much better pictures than what was shown on the auction page.
