Coin Vault Sets New Grading Standard! (I Think...)

I know, I know, CV gets bashed on a regular basis, and for good reason. But, they may have begun a new grading standard! Here's the deal:

20 AU/CU Peace dollars, $299.97 (but it's on Flex Pay! and $10.12 S/H.)

Forget the $ ripoff but what is CU? Cherry Uncirculated? Close to Uncirculated? Cinch Uncirculated? Could be Uncirculated? Check to see if Uncirculated? ....?

I realize I'm missing something here in the Peace $ grading lingo - I specialize in Lincoln Wheats and I don't think we have a CU grade. Maybe I'm way behind the curve here, but it wouldn't be the first time.

Is this real? Any explanations would be appreciated.

Years ago we called "CU" Commercial Unc. Sliders what it was referred to.

Edit... I don't know if my reference is what they are hyping though.

Stands for Choice Uncirculated...MS65 (Thats what the redbook says)

Of course I think the chances of getting a MS65 is ZERO! lol

I love watching that show and laughing my numismatic a$$ off

  • Well - is it Commercial Uncirculated or Choice Uncirculated? Or maybe, one of my guesses?!

    Commercial Unc. is MS60'ish.
    Choice Unc. equals MS63.
Gem Unc. stands for MS65, with Superb Gem meaning MS67.

"Commercial Unc." is still quite commonly used between dealers and knowledgeable buyers. I'm surprised to see this on TV though.

Last year my wife bought me a nice Christmas present, my first $20 Saint. I heard the dealer call a friend asking him for the latest price on a common date "commercial unc." Thankfully the price she paid is about the same as melt value today.

The only grading service I know of to codify "CU" is Accugrade. I own a Columbian half in a very early ACG photoslab graded "A3-63c" The C, I have since learned, stood for "commercial 63", and the coin is a nice cleaned AU-55.

  • You guys are sharp! This is why I spend time on these Boards.

Knowing Coin Vault, CU probably is their way of saying "Couldn't be Uncirculated" - liability concerns!

  • I've never seen this show....I guess I've been overseas too long. But...I hear how "funny" it is. If I send someone a blank tape, will you record it for me? I could use a good laugh. image

    They have it on again.
The part in question has the Peace dollars in AU/CU.
Robert Chambers is stating that AU is About Uncirculated.
and the coins will grade AU to Mint State 60 (uncirculated) "all the way up to Choice Uncirculated in MS62 or MS63".

So, he uses CU as Choice Uncirculated and uses that to mean MS62-MS63.

Just FYI.....he is also saying silver dollars ARE increasing in price on thier show soon. Not "if" but "WILL" image

    Get 20 AU/CU Peace Dollars for $299.97 ... Random Dates/Mint Marks. In a holder as well...heh....
Upcoming prices "that's where it HAS to go"... $329-$339.

Better get 'em now folks....heh heh heh

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

  • CU is a currency grade (Crisp Uncirculated). Maybe they are selling Peace dollar bills!
  • Maybe it means "Crap Useless"... image

I would say it stands for CRISPY UNCIRCULATED
  • Last night they were selling certified $50 Eagles MS69 for $649.95. They were selling the proofs for almost $900.

  • Can someone tell me when the next time one of these shows is on. It's been a long time, and I'm not sure where to find it anymore. I remember it being on really late.

Couldn't sleep last Fri nite/Sat morning, so, from about 4 AM or so on, I watched Coin Vault. Every time they cited a number of something issued in a given year I looked it up. Not too concerned with accuracy, they are. What a major league rip. They had a mega collection of picked over Proof Sets from 1950 to 2003, not silver, prestige or premier and the early ones were not in original packaging, and not matched. They said it was worth $5200, but they were going to sell the 8-10 sets they had for only $4200. On Three-pay, that's only . . . . Bleech!!!!!!!!!!!
