SEG grading

Can someone explain this to me?
When some of these lower tier grading services put on there label "Toned" are they stating it is
Artificial Toning or are they just stating that the coin is not Brilliant?

They are saying the coin is toned

SEGS gradings is horrific and their text on the labels is useless. We had high hopes for them when they first started, but false promises, PVC graded coins, wrong attributions, and consistent overgrading has made them a joke, its too bad, because they have the best holder in the industry.
  • Wingedliberty;
What coins have SEGS misattributed? Post the particulars, and I'll be sure Larry knows when I see him at the FUN Show.

There are still those who support SEGS for a number of reasons. These may include the reasons.

    1. They are buried in SEGS garbage and have no outlet.
    2. They have a financial interest.
    3. They are part of the Numismatic Axis of Evil.
    4. They don't know how to grade.
    5. They may have received the free Franklin that they were promised when they joined the SEGS Alliance,
    I sure didn't.

    or any combination thereof.

    FYI:
The plethora of SEGS missattributions and grammatical spelling errors witnessed on labels would
    exceed my computer memory alloted.

the reason I ask is I saw a seg slab morgan on ebay that the toning looked questionable on and saw that they put "Toned" on the slab certificate. So I was confused as to if SEG is just stating the obvious or are they saying Artificial Toned. i havent found a SEG slab that I would buy yet,if and when it happens it will be in person.........

You're correct, they use the toned designation on alot of AT garbage. I am not surprised that you have not found a SEGS coin that has met your criteria, therefore, stick to PCGS and NGC.
  • Brian:
A to #1.-I don't own any SEGS slabbed coins.
    Never have.
A to #2.-I don't own any part of SEGS.
    Never have.
A to #3-I certainly am not any part of a "numismatic axis of evil"
A to #4-I feel my grading skills serve me well. I've been collecting
since 1957. Ran coin shows and dealt part time for 12
    years.
A to #5=I know nothing about this "SEGS Alliance" you joined.

If they're misattributing coins as you stated, come up with the particulars.

I have ONE THING to say about SEGS. Maybe I got lucky...No, that dog won't hunt because I've been "lucky " too many times. I found a SEGS 1932-S Washington Quarter MS 62 for $350 because nobody likes them-cracked it open and found it to be of such incredible quality, exhibiting total ,unbroken, cart-whell luster , that when I submitted it, it came back MS 64!! Drat the luck! I've found such terrible finds in PCI slabs too, that when submitted came back a grade HIGHER than marked on the slab! Personally, I am tickled pink that people have such bias towards the 2nd & 3rd tier services that I can hardly maintain any semblance of self control! No doubt ,I'm just a cherrypicking Mc Daddy that likes finding treasure in "trash bins" LEARN TO GRADE AND BUY THE COIN-NOT THE PLASTIC!!

I like SEGS for some stuff, Seated Coinage, for example.
I don't particularly think they're useful with other stuff, DMPL Morgans, for example.

SEGS does have a terrific holder and pretty good customer service. I called once and it was Larry Briggs who answered the phone! I had a couple of questions regarding SEGS holdered "Experimental Wash" Sacawageas and he was informative and didn't appear rushed.

  • Ok Brian Ostro, (wingedliberty) you've had a couple days to dig up the info, now tell us what coins SEGS has misattributed.
