Regarding older Washington Quarters...the 32-S has a lower mintage than the D yet the D in the very same grade as the S commands more money! Why is that? The 35-S actually has a lower mintage than the D, yet the D again commands more money! HMMMM! There are way more 36-Ds than Ss yet the same holds true AGAIN! I collect them and don't know why and have yet to meet ONE PERSON that can provide me with a definitive answer! "Things that make you go 'HMMM' "!! Think you know? As for '32-D&S mint state coins, the Oct. Pop. Report shows a total of 1,041 D's graded vs. 1,470 S's graded. That's not 100% fact due to crackouts, but there have been 32-S crackouts too. Relatively speaking, the D is quite a bit rarer.

The sensitive folks of the bay area are more gentle than their Denver counterparts. Less excessive wear.

S mint coins have always had a reputation as being "better" coins and are hoarded to a greater extent than their Philadephia and Denver counterparts. So although the mintages may be lower, the survival rate for San Francisco coins is usually greater, and those that survive tend to be in better condition.
