Idea for a new registry set.....

.....Type sets!!! For example a complete topps type set 1952-1980 or Bowman 1948-1955. Sounds like a great idea to me, because you don't need a lot of cards, and you, if complete, as a complete guide trough baseball history.

Would like to hear your opinions about this.....

  • There is a more general one on the registry already - Ultimate PSA Sampler Vintage Set.

I've thought about giving this one a shot. I agree that some more specific sets might appeal more to some collectors:

    •Topps
    •Bowman
•N cards & T cards (together or as separate sets)
    •E cards
•Early Gum cards - Delong, Goudey, Diamond Stars, Play Ball, World Wide Gum

Just some suggestions. I would be interested to see how people would split it up (or combine issues). I still prefer a "master" type set like the PSA Sampler, but that's just me.

The ultimate PSA sampler set isn't that ultimate- it has N29's, but not N28's. '60 Bell Brand but not '58, '54-55 Johnston's but not '53's. I put in a request to BJ about adding those and she said it was up to the person that requested it, and apparentely he gave it a image Didn't know the person that requested a set made the rules.
It would be nice to see a complete type set, maybe pre WW2 and post, regionals, E cards, etc. Can't be any worse an idea than a Woodie Held master set!

  • Goodriddance189, Have you requested that set yet and will the set just be Topps and Parkhurst or will it include OPC cards also. I was thinking of requesting a set like that but i was going to also add all the prewar sets that PSA will grade.

paul, im working on a run of every regular issue set from 1951-1989. this includes parkhurst, topps and OPC. i try to keep it to regular issue cards (no in action, all star, or even coaches cards- just regular player cards). the total # of cards is 66; i have 43 thus far, 7 PSA 8's and the rest are 9's or 10's. of course, ive left the 50's and some of the 60's cards till last, so itll be awhile before i finish it. im trying to put it together using primarily HOF'ers and rookies. i havent requested the set yet, mainly because ive seen the inconsistent set makeup of the Ultimate Vintage sampler set. i could honestly care less about having it in the registry. too many problems would arise with what cards can and cant be included (especially with stuff like 62 Parkhurst where there are 4 unique designs in the set- do you need one or all 4?).

when i finally finish this set, i have a few options- i can either try to get all the oddball/insert cards produced in this time (sime examples being 1955 quaker oats, 1970 dad's cookies, the various opc inserts like stamps and glossies, 62 york yellow backs, etc etc), or i can go after pre war stuff. the only problem with prewar is that i refuse to collect anything lower than PSA 7, and for some sets i doubt any cards have even graded that high.

That's the first I've heard of that happening. I have BJ add cards to sets and even remove some from time to time. On several occasions (adding cards to Basic Player sets and removing cards from sets), BJ told me Joe Orlando had to ok the change. This is the way it should happen, not by asking the original submitter of the set if it's ok. If this is the way it's going to work, we'll end up with a lot of "personal favorite" sets that nobody except the original submitter would be remotely interested in. image (See All-Time Dallas Cowboys set for example image)

  • i still think they should have college alumni sets....i just haven't figured out how the compilation should go.

and i think with the glutton of modern stuff they should have x-player autograph registry sets.

    Jeb-
You're probably right, I assumed that since BJ said she'd get back to me after talking to the requester and never did that he'd vetoed it. I hope that isn't the case. There was a question floated about what should be Phil Rizzuto's rookie HOF card- I voted for the '48 Leaf or '48 Bowman, but the Leaf was vetoed by a few other guys and it just didn't seem right- they came out the same year. BJ and Gayle and Cosetta seem to do so much for all of us and are so nice to deal with I hate to ask them the same thing twice- so I just skip it. If any has any more info on the type set please post it- it would be nice to have a true complete type set on the registry. Leon Luckey's one on the SGC registry is pretty incredible, and I'm sure there are some being assembled almost as good in PSA slabs.
(not a knock on PSA, but more recognition of what Leon has put together- and he seems like a truly good guy as well)

Griffins - if you want to accumulate support to get the decision changed, I vote that either is acceptable for Rizzuto. Both are mainstream issues from the same season.

Virt - on the Cowboys "set", can you say "ewwwwwwww".
