Who says patterns are too expensive?

boiler78boiler78 Posts: 3,080 ✭✭✭✭✭
A regular issue 1862 half dollar (mintage 550) in proof 65 sells for $5,000+ This 1862 pattern half dollar (mintage 30-40) sells in the $3,000 range and is virtually identical with the exception being the "God Our Trust" motto added to the reverse. Pretty good value IMO. More than 10x rarer and $2,000 cheaperimage

I've bought 1858 patterns, P65, for 2K. The regular issue would have cost 20K at the time......agree that, relatively speaking, some patterns are a bargain. My icon cost a bit more......image

The FE pattern is sorely missing from my set, the few IHC patterns I have make my set all the more interesting. That "GOD OUR TRUST" proof pattern sure is sweet.

Hard to argue with that logic. I think I might buy a pattern one of these days. image

This was one of the first I ever bought, a J191, PCGS P65. Got lucky as it had the rare transitional 6 leaf reverse of 1859. I haven't found another one since.

No, Boiler, you can't have it!image

Lakes- The 1858 small cent patterns illustrate my point even better but I still need 2 coins and neither one of us needs any more competition for them!image

MFH - FE patterns are not too hard to come by.

Mr Eureka - I could teach you a little about patterns, if you have some time.image
  • MFHMFH Posts: 11,720 ✭✭✭✭
Rick Kay : Don't throw me off the chase... I think that I can swing one - J191 - in PR 63- 64 - 65. That is if Bowers' new Judd Pattern book is fairly acurate in their pricing. I's settle for the J-192, but prefer the
    J-191.

It very well could be the only pattern cent I'll actively seek in 2004.

Lakesmmman: If you'll let me know what you'll consider for your J-191, seeing as though you didn't want a suite for the FUN convention, we may have some future dealings...if you really don't want to part with your coin, and I can't blame you, and you have gotten a lead on one for "Boiler" ... think of me if a second one becomes available.

Lakesmmman: Pushkin mentioned that you have a very nice collection of pattern Flyers. Are you selling any other duplicates ?

Have a wonderful holiday everyone, if I don't get back to you immediately...Mike

Same for the proof $20 patterns, many are less $ than what the "regular" issue proofs go for.
  • boiler78boiler78 Posts: 3,080 ✭✭✭✭✭
Mike- I already have a J 191 so I am really not interested in Lakes coin. I am only doing a 12 piece set of 1858 small cent patterns. Lakesammman is doing all of the varieties which is much more challenging. The coin he posted is the rare 6 leaf reverse variety J 191 (Pollock 234) my coin has the more common 5 leaf reverse.

If you are serious about buying a flying eagle pattern J191/J192/J193 then Rick is your guy. He will find one for you he is very persistent

MFH - Sorry, I don't tend to have duplicates. As noted by Boiler, I've been trying to do all the sub-varieties. For instance, there are 4 J208's. Unfortunately, with the popularity of patterns now, even the easy ones are hard to find. My advice would be, if offered one that's even close to acceptable, buy it and trade up later. Nice ones just aren't coming available very often, in spite of what Kay says.

Mike (MFH) - If you are going to FUN, stop by my table (941). Rick
  • Patterns ARE expensive. Maybe they are cheaper than other high price coins
relatively, but $3,000 is still a lot to be using as an example of a "cheap" coin.
I have only spent $3,000 on a coin once, and I am still trying to let my budget
recover. I would love to add a pattern to my collection, but I can't handle 4
    figures.

$3,000 is too expensive for me. Got anything for around $200?
  • orevilleoreville Posts: 12,148 ✭✭✭✭✭
These usually go for under $50. Foreign patterns ARE cheap and beautiful. US Patterns are not cheap in comparison but ARE cheap when considering how rare they are and they are a LOT cheaper than the regular mint proofs in $20 gold issues of the 19th century.

Sorry. Didn't see this before. I have several large FEs from 1854 and 1855. I have a 204. I MAY have a 191, but have to check tomorrow. Boiler is right, that I will find one, if you want one.
  • orevilleoreville Posts: 12,148 ✭✭✭✭✭
Robgetty/Placid: There are US patterns that go for under $3000. I noted that RKKay's website has a few under $3k and even a couple under $2k. With some persistence you can find some closer to the $1K price range but they are indeed getting tougher.

But don't let your budget stop you!

There are other ways to collect patterns and yet stick within your budget. Buy the old books! Buy the Adams-Woodlin, Judd ( 7 versions) and Pollack books! They easily fit within the $200 budget and I daresay any collector who brings a Adams-Woodlin book with him to any show will get as many inquiries and open jaws as the owner of the finest of the $4 Stellas!!!

There are so many ways to collect patterns!

oreville- That UK piece isn't actually a pattern coin. Modern replica or unofficial pattern would be a better description. If that was a real proof pattern soverign it would easily be a five figure coin.

That being said, these are very well made and make for an interesting and inexpensive presentation.

    Hi Rick,
Sorry I didn't answer right away. I won't be able to get to the FUN sale. Let me know about the J-191, if you have it.

    Hi Mark,
I wish I could post my J208, its in an NGC holder, PR 63, which I won at a Teletrade auction in March, 1999.
I bid fairly heavy at that time, but I think its a beauty.

    Everyone,

    Happy Holidays
