How did this get full steps?

It may be the photo, but I see a large nick and weak area under pillar 3. If I submitted this jefferson to pcgs, it would not come back full steps.

Full Steps?

  • Maybe under the Rev of 38 rules it was a FS but then got a designation change?

Honestly I would have to see the coin in person to say that it was or was not a FS coin. Lighting can be tricky and hide the true detail. But then again I have seen more than 1 mistake in designations.

Spendy/important coin to make a mistake on. I do hope it is a legit FS coin. I argue its not an MS67 image

  • True but I must say that if you ignore everything but the steps, they do look full. Monticello looks like a blob.

The insert is full steps but the coin ain't.
The most money I made are on coins I haven't sold.

  • If that were my coin it would not have gotten FS.
The fifth step has a large break in it, not to mention the hugh nick above it.

the nick, whether post-strike or a planchet flaw, would preclude proper PCGS designation as Full Steps. with regard to bridges, i find that looking at the steps straight on isn't the best way to determine this. i like to rotate the coin and look along the steps.

It got the FS designation because, in the words of others, nobody is perfect....and in my own words, even though they get paid thirty bucks a pop to be so.

  • I don't think so!

  • just the angle - if you tilt it 20 degrees to the left, I bet it would show FS

Did you check out the super-duper close up on the auction site? I know that a change in angle can be very revealing, but I have a hard time seeing that with this one. I'd like to see it to be sure.
