Proposal: PSA Sponsored Dealer(s) of the Year Award voted by collectors

Sadly, there's a lot of energy focused on the bad things in the hobby. Some of it is warranted, but a lot of it isn’t. One bright spot in the hobby for collectors is the Registry Awards. This recognizes many collectors’ achievements made over a given year.
I believe another way to shine some positive light on the hobby is for the PSA Registry Collectors to recognize the best dealers in the hobby. Therefore, I’d like to propose that the Registry Collectors, with the help of PSA, come up with a way of nominating and voting a 2003 Dealer of the Year Award. One other idea is instead of having just one award, we give out 10 or 20 as a “2003 PSA Registry Collector’s Seal of Approval Award”. These select dealers would receive certificates. I believe it would be best if only a limited quantity of the “Approval” awards were given out so that there is some prestige in receiving the award. If this is successful, it could be made an annual event.
Any ideas on exactly how to nominate dealers and then vote for them? We could do it as a Forum Poll, but there are some drawbacks, mainly having trolls hijack the voting, etc. Perhaps PSA can sponsor the voting by accepting votes to a special e-mail account they’ve set up and accepting votes from Registry Members only.
If such an awards program takes off, I think it would be very beneficial to the hobby at large since it would encourage all dealers to improve their service to the collectors. So what do you guys think?
Hopefully Joe Orlando will respond and give us some feedback on this idea.

That's a terrific idea!!!
Highlighting the dealers that "really do" want their business and the hobby around them to grow, is a huge step forward for all of us. All the registry members have something to gain by using professional, honest, and quality dealers.
Count me in!!!
Suggestion:
PSA should create a "logo" for the winning dealers. Something they could use in their marketing (advertising, flyers, business cards.......)
I can think of 1/2 dozen dealers that deserve this special recognition...

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's
Let's keep it simple: limit it to one award and not have numerous "seals of approval."
The in-progress voting results should not be visible like in previous polls here. This will avoid anyone being influenced by the voting trend.
The eligible contestants will consist of the "Featured Dealers" and "Authorized Dealers" listed on PSA's web site.
The voting period will be two weeks, and PSA will announce the winner here in mid-January.
PSA could write an article in SMR about the winner; the article would contain their picture and comments from voters on why this dealer is so highly regarded.

I will nominate these three.

<< <i>1420sports: This thread is NOT to nominate anyone; it's to ask what we all think of the idea. Please edit your message to remove your nominations. >>
I must have missed the voting that put you in charge of this idea.
Currently collecting.....your guess is as good as mine.
I will be publishing my annual Top 10 Dealers of 2003 list on Monday.

Please read again what Dude (Dan Markel) asked for on this thread: "Any ideas on exactly how to nominate dealers and then vote for them?"
He didn't ask people to vote here!

Another that I have had a wonderful pleasure dealing with is Will Hays. I think he mostly does all of his work through EBAY. He is too easy to work with.
Just my 2 cents.

I like Will Hays too. He used to be withy Sports Cards Plus but now he is slummin on ebay.
Saving my top 3 for my Monday list.

Please bear with me, as I am a jackass
I think his presence is missed there. Every time I get a call from them I cringe because the sales guy always butchers the names of the players. I called Mastronet and put a bid on a 52T Kluzewski and the guy who answered the phone just butchered his name. He said he was a computer programmer not a sports fan.
Most customer friendly dealer.
Since Davalillo mentioned it. Most sports knowledgable dealer.
an award for the dealer with the most aggressive buy/selling prices Maybe this could generate dealer to raise their buying / drop their selling prices. I can dream can't I.
Best shipping or quickest turn around dealer.
Best over all dealer.
Best auction house / dealer.
What do these ideas sound like. Please pick them apart if necessary.
Rob
Thanks for reaffirming the intent of your original message. Unfortunately, some people didn't comprehend what they read. You clearly asked for ideas on how to do this, yet some were already giving the awards out! You are to be commended for coming up with an outstanding idea.

You can't see the results unless you have already voted.

Great Idea!!!
I think that it would generate a much needed data base of honest hard working dealers that both buyers and sellers would greatly benefit from.I would say that there should be only one vote allowed from one ISP if that is possible.

PS,
I'm back!!! Did anyone miss me ???????

well then, .......... this won't take long at all will it ??
I like your idea but I would like to take it one step farther. What we really need is a GSCA. What's a GSCA? Graded Sportscard Collectors Association.
A GSCA could be a sounding board for promoting the good, exposing the bad, and educating and informing collectors at all stages.
In your example, a GSCA could give unbiased, non political, awards if the membership desired. We wouldn't have to worry if the largest submitter might not like the results. PSA is my preferred grading company, however, with PSA handling the voting there would always be the potential conflict of interest.
Also, a GSCA wouldn't be tied to one grading company. I honestly think it might be an bridge to stop all of the infighting between the PSA, SGC, BGS camps...so we can work together to make things better. With the talent that I have met through just the annual dinner that we've started, I am confident we could make this a worthwhile organization.

Alan
I agree with you and have seen the need for a non-profit National Sportscard Collectors Association for years (but would not limit it to graded cards only).
The idea is usually scoffed at and those I have mentioned it to point to the EPSCC and GBSCC and how these clubs exist mainly to "sponsor" shows and have a very limited number of members.
I am willing to volunteer some time to advance the idea further, as i see the potential for such an association to benefit the hobby in a big way.
Acowa,
I agree with Mercerfan and you 100%.I would also be willing to give of my time as well.I do think that Mercerfan is right in that this should not be limited to graded cards but should actually be inclusive to all sports card dealers.I would like to think that it should include dealers related to sports collecting on the whole as but maybe we as mainly card collectors should concentrate on helping to get out the word on quality card dealers. It is an interesting topic and one that I think we should put some time and effort into. This concept may eventually be looked upon in the future as one that gave direction to a hobby that certainly can use a database of positive honest dealers no matter which grading company they chose to promote or if they chose to promote ungraded cards only.
Dan,
KUDOS for getting this idea out and starting a dialogue.I am quite confident your name would be among the top dealers( although I know that this was not your intention).I do however, think that this should be an independent organization of all grading companies so that it will encompass as many feedback participants as possible. Some will not see the positive side if this was connected with one grading company or another, regardless of which company it might be.

However, I agree with the posts about it not being connected to and sponsored by PSA... unfortunately, if it was done that way, it would probably get tainted and be viewed more as an ebay "power seller" award.
I think it would hold much more meaning (to the sellers and collectors) if it was done more as a "people's choice" type of award.... chosen and given out by the collectors only.
Mike
I could donate my services for the project above or the "Sportscard Collectors Association". I think this would be a good step forward in saving the ol' brick n mortar shops.
