What were the top events of 2003?

What do you think were the big events of the year in the hobby as a whole, and for yourself personally?

The ones that come to mind for me are the fifth 1913 Liberty nickel coming to light (and the exhibit of all five at the ANA), the big shakeup at B&M, and the ACG/ANA hearing. I still can't get over that fifth nickel showing up! I was standing with the rest of the crowd outside the show entrance when they made the announcement and I was astounded.

Personally, I went to the ANA show, got to work behind the table at two shows, and my best pickup was a nice Matte proof Lincoln.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

How about the 70 grade spigot reopening at PCGS? If we define top events as something that has a dramatic marketplace impact, that certainly qualifies.

My personal top event happened on 4.08.03. image

Just for the record, we need to remember the break up of the space shuttle and the invasion of Iraq.

    Numismatically,
Acquiring an 1861-O $20 and my first (and several subsequent) Dahlonega coins
Making many new friends in the coin collecting and dealing space, especially board members "Dahlonega", "DaveG", "CoinLieutenant", and infrequent contributor, "branchmintgold"
Attended Southern Gold Society meeting in Dalton, GA

    It's been a great year!

I got to see all five 1913 Liberty nickels, an 1804 Silver dollar, 1884 & 1885 proof trade dollars. They were all pretty neat events for me. The best part was the people I got
to see throughout the year at various shows I was lucky enough to be able to attend.

  • I started collecting coins (my son joined me)
Went to my first coin show (only 30ish booths)
Found a die crack in a circ lincoln

    Good year. image
  • It'd have to be the coinage recovered from the S.S.Republic as the top event.

    As for me:
    1) Meeting and chatting with all the fruit loops in this forum.
    2) Being vacuumed into the plastic game where coins are concerned.
    3)Building a new home.
    4) Bringing a 4th razorface junior into the world (potential YN I'll add).
    5) Learning a helluvalot more than what I thought I knew about numismatics.
Last but not least, continuing #5...image
