Digital Cameras ... Need advice

I know this has come up a thousand times on the Boards, but I didnt want to go back and search all the threads relating to this topic. So I am hoping some of you can help.

I am in the market for a camera that I can use for family pics / vacations as well as coins. I am willing to spend a decent amount of a good camera since its not just for coins.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for your help!!

Opinions on camaras here on the boards seem to be a common as flies at a manure packing plant.

There are many really nice ones out there, the things to be careful to look for are:

    1 - A good macro capability
    2 - A good auto-white balance function
    3 - high megapixel count

These would hold true for the coin part of the question.

For family photos, probably a nice zoom capability

I use a Sony Cybershot DSC-S85, great for regular pictures of family and travel, also takes excellent closeup (macro) photos of little things like coins. If you're going to use it to photograph coins, make sure the camera you choose will focus on something close to the lens, my camera is good for as close as 4 cm.

  • Have a look at DP Review - they do a great job and one of the tests involve it's ability to do macro shots.

I have a Nikon Coolpix 3100 which I really like. The next step up from that, which I believe is a 4300 is a good one and is also a Consumer Reports Best Buy recommendation.

I use the Nikon CP 4500... great macro, 4MP, and the swiveling lens let's you use a cheap, mini tripod instead of a copy stand...

  • I use the Canon PowerShot A70, there's a A80 model out now too.
  • I use a Fujifilm S5000 and it takes excellent pics.

Me too.......GREAT camera. I researched it to death and can say that its just about the best camera (for coins and everything else) you can get for around $300. Its simple enough to be used by the point and shoot crowd, yet has LOTS of adjustability and great software that lets you completely control the shots. I love the remote capture feature. I set up my little tripod and plug the camera into the computer and take a series of pics with different settings without touching the camera at all. Perfect repeatability.

B&H and Ritz Camera are both very good... as are best buy. circuit city, etc...

Just remember, if it's too good to be true, it probably is--many places you'll find online are selling international models that don't come with warranties, or even english instruction... beware!

I just got a ricoh rdc-4200 for $80.00 and on my first try took some awsome pics..............if you want a cheap alternative to buying a megadollar camera with megapixels, give this one a look.........1.3 megapixels with awsome macro capabilities.
