Merc Upgrade - Courtesy of JB Stevens

I was never very happy with my old '17-S in 64, so when Jason put his set up for sale last week, it seemed like a chance for both of us to get what we wanted. The coin arrived yesterday, and I'm quite pleased with it. The obverse has some very light haze that isn't always visible, depending on the angle at which you're viewing the coin. The obverse is satiny, while the reverse has a coruscating luster. Thanks, Jason! Good luck with your dollars.

This moves me up a whopping .02 points, so Marc and Wayne are safe, but the FUN show is only 3 weeks away. image Are there any other Merc collectors (other than Tim) who plan to go?

    Nice looking coin.

When JB put these coins up you guys were way too quick about picking off the really cool ones. Well almost....he still has one I am thinking about. image

    Ken,

Are you divesting or accumulating Mercs? A while ago you were selling your collection (or part of it). It is good to know you can't give them up. Go for it and buy one of Jason's Mercs!

Only the dates after 1931 are going away. image Sticking to my decision and will try to update early dates. I guess that gives a little clue as to which of the coins I have interest in.

Never Ever will the Mercs be put on the back burner. image

I, too, am happy with the small upgrade I got from Jason. I wish I could find the missing dates????

  • I'm definately in the Merc field, I love em, just got myself another nice little 1944 MS-63 today, had a choice between a White and a Gold, but the White just had more eye appeal to me, though the gold one wouldn't have been bad either. I finally got the ANA Grading Standards book and had a realization about how to identify FSB imageimageimage on Mercs... oops... I had thought before that it was seperation in the sticks, I guess I just had my terminology mixed up and didn't realize. image Oh well... any of those replaced mercs going up for sale at a reasonable Poor Student price? image I might be in the market, especially if I don't find anything I like at FUN... but then again... I'll freakin only be there on Sunday... so most people will have left... of well, there's plenty of nice dealers that I know that'll take my wishlist to big shows to find what I need... I love you C.D.o.A.W.A.N.T.N.C. (That's the Coin Dealers of America Who Are Nice To Newbie Collectors and is pronounced Ca-Doe-At-Wan-Tic) image

    Jim,

That is a nice piece indeed - glad you got it. I had my sights on FUN but now seems I will be unable to attend - so you can go and buy up all the Merc's image I don't recall noticing any really pretty dates or grades I needs anyhows in all the FUN sales but perhaps that was at first glance.

    Marc,

Sorry you won't be at the FUN show, but I won't be buying all the Mercs there. Realistically, there are only 5 coins that I would try to locate, unless I go for upgrades. I haven't had a chance to look at all of the auctions yet, but I've been disappointed with the Mercs I've seen so far. There will probably be some nice ones on the bourse floor, though. If I strike out there, I'll look for other coins - Walkers, Standing Liberties, or items I need for my Type set. My needs there are numerous, so I won't return home empty-handed or disappointed.

George, welcome to the world of Mercs! Are you collecting raw coins, slabbed, or both? If you make your needs known, there are probably folks here who can help you with a few pieces. There are a lot of dates in the '30's and '40's in MS64FB or MS65 non-FB that could be within the reach of a high school student. Good luck with them.

  • Nice coin, Jim.

I wish Jason had a few that I could use. Thinking 'bout that '31-D, but would rather have the bands. image

    Welcome aboard, George.

  • I only have raw so far, but will probally end up getting a few slabbed eventually. Just gotta save the money first =D. I have a little registry set question I've been trying to figure out... It seems to me that the PCGS Registry Sets, you have to be a Gold or Platinum Member to participate. "Participation in Registry Sets" is listed as a benefit for Gold and Platinum Members but not mentioned for Silver, but I definately am not gonna shell out $100 to do it, especially when NGC is free, AND accepts NGC and PCGS slabs...

    Thx
