All-Time Finest Two Cent Registry Set... Sold

It's been about 10 years since I purchased my first PCGS MS65RD two cent piece, an 1869 MS65RD. Not long after that I decided to assemble a set in MS65RD. I discovered, there was what seemed to be, little interest in the short series. When higher graded pieces would occasionally become available, I was able to purchase Finest Known pieces without much competition. This was at a time when dealer web sites weren't as common as today, and most of the coins were found in dealers' ads in Coin World and Numismatic News. In 1997 I purchased what I thought would be the last coin for my set, an 1868 MS66RD. I considered my set complete until I saw Larry Whitlow had an 1872 MS66RD available. I couldn't dial the phone fast enough! That coin then became the last coin I purchased for my set. I've come to realize upgrading the 1864 and 1865 is probably out of the question. These coins don't come to market often. About 2 years ago I missed an 1865 MS67RD because I didn't know it was being auctioned. So I figure it's time to let someone else have the coins and hopefully they will get as much enjoyment from them as I have.

Anyway, enough of the boring stuff...

As of this afternoon, thanks to Mike Printz (Larry Whitlow) who handled the sale for me, they now belong to another collector.

I first mentioned this to Mike about 3 months ago. Since then Mike has gone out of his way to make me feel comfortable about selling my coins. First and foremost, I'm a collector. I've sold very few coins and most of those were to get an upgrade. As I stated previously, when I was looking for coins I would look to CW and NN for the dealer ads. Today web sites with digitally photographed or scanned images make it a lot easier to shop for coins. Mike has done a fantastic job imaging the set. If you'd like to see the coins(done professionally) on Larry Whitlow's web site CLICK HERE. (NOTICE TO THOSE WITH DIAL-UP CONNECTIONS, THIS MAKE TAKE A FEW MINUTES. IF IT STOPS BEFORE THE ENTIRE PAGE IS DOWNLOADED SIMPLY CLICK REFRESH) Mike has a keen ability to image coins. I've purchased a number of coins from Larry Whitlow over the years, and I must say Mike's images are second to none. What you see is what you're going to get when he sends you the coin.

In a few days Mike will be listing a few dupes I have too. I haven't decided what to keep for my type sets so I can't say for sure what those might be. If you're interested in owning a nice two cent piece, contact Mike Printz at Larry Whitlow for information.

I'll be retiring my Two Cent Sets in a day or so.

Thanks for looking!
Dan

I was thinking... stamps? NOT!!! image

Prior to Registry coin collecting, which is a form of coin collecting, I was primarily a type collector. In Registry collecting, the objective is to purchase coins graded higher than anyone else. image I want to get back to coin collecting. I would like to improve my Circ. Type Sets a bit and also assemble a nice Washington Quarter set in the MS64 - MS67 range, depending on rarity, that I've started next door.

Otherwise, just have fun collecting nice coins.

I would highly recommend this! I have done the regular set in MS66 with the exception of the 32-d and 32-S. I had intended to add these in 65, but the prices keep soaring, so I am thinking of adding them in 64 -- but there is NO pressure to do anything anytime soon. I have been adding varieties in MS65. I also have many, many circulated varieties.

I have some "Registry Collections" and some that I do just for me. The Washington quarters are just for me, and are not registered. It is very rewarding in a different way.

DAM: I would suggest doing a year set of washington quarters in MS-65 or 66. This way you can have a complete date set of quarters without getting hung up on the 32-D and 32-S and 34-D, etc.

This will allow you to continue your type set as I am also doing. It is too hard trying to do type sets and a complete set of coin such as the Washies at the same time!

Also doing a year set of washies avoids the registry set keeping up with the Jones.

  • It was a great set to have assembled. I'm sorry to
see it sold, but as long as you are happy with what
you are doing, that is the important thing. Glad that
you are able to keep your "collector's roots"!

Saw the set pics....wow, a lovely set. An underappreciated series that seems to blow hot and cold. Dan was fortunate to find someone who appreciated the set as much as he did, we hope.

All sets someday get their day in the sun!

I haven't had the pleasure of personally talking to the collector that purchased the set, yet. My understanding is the collector is a quality driven individual. I am humbled that the this collector felt the set I assembled was worthy of remaining intact. My hope is the collector is able to improve the set with pieces I was unable to obtain.
