Collector pays £15,500 for rare 10p silver coin sold at auction

A RARE Irish coin was sold for £15,500 this weekend even though its value in the modern decimal system is just 10p.
The silver coin, a 1943 Florin, was worth two shillings when it was minted.
That was done by the Central Bank nearly 60 years ago.
But it has rapidly appreciated in value since then.
"I sold one two and a half years ago for £10,500 and then the second one this weekend for £15,500- there is a huge appreciation of value on these coins," said Ian Whyte of Whyte's auctioneers and valuers.
The coin is one of only four mint ones that are currently sought after.
It was bought by a Seattle-based dealer, Del Parker, who has been dealing primarily in Irish coins for the past 25 years.
Mr Parker said that there was considerable interest in the coins among the Irish community the world over, from North America to Australia.
"A lot of Irish people collect the old coins in order to hold onto some part of their history," Mr Parker said.
It is understood he has already sold the coin to an outside client.
When asked if the buyer was Irish he quipped: "I presume so as he is a Catholic priest."
The coin was sold at an auction by Whyte's auctioneers and valuers who ran a full weekend of events for coin collectors and enthusiasts.
That included a two-day international coin fair in the RDS.
Both the auction and the coin fair brought collectors from America, the North and the UK as well as phone and internet bidders from Germany and other countries across the world.
