    Glenn
  • Thanks Glenn! Yes you are right, children used to play with that top during Hanukka holidays ...

Man! That is cool! Sweet!! I bet its ergonomics are perfect, and that it spins well.

If I'm not mistaken, the word dreidel comes from the German word for spin/turn.

I didn't know if they have it in Israel yet, but on Arab TV it's called "Block 13" image

Shipcoin, surely you're right that it's Yiddish, which is a Germanic language.

  • I hate to call a government agency a liar image, but that's only a generic top, not a dreidel, which is a four sided top with a Hebrew letter on each side. The letters SHIN, HEY, GIMEL, NUN mean "A Great Miracle Happened There. A real Israeli top's letters mean " A Great Miracle Happened HERE!".

During Channukah children play a game with the dreidel, using pennies, nuts, raisins, or chocolate coins (gelt) as tokens or chips.

After someone spins the dreidel, the letter that is facing up when it stops tells the players:

NUN - nothing happens - next player spins the dreidelimage

GIMEL - player takes all tokens in the potimage

HEY - player takes half of the potimage

SHIN - player must put one token into the potimage

At least that's the way I learned it in the 1930s!

    Compare image

    with a real one image
    Edited to add pictures.

  • Newsman, sure I know about that "film". European countries Ambassadors in Israel fainted , when one of Israeli ministers (Scharanskii ) showed them only some small parts of that "film". It looks exactly like Dr. Gebels propaganda- I saw some passages from there. image

(But I'm not sure that the "film" you are speaking about has the same name in European countries)

Satootoko -you fantasticly erudite guy! Certainly, I know all the facts you have mentioned here, but I didn't know the rules of children's game and what each letter means, when children play! THANKS!!!! Now when my boys will play real dreidels, like those ones

    Real Dreidels

they will know , when everyone gets nutes!! image

Don't worry, Nickolai, the real "South Park" is quite different, and quite funny, especially the ones depicting Saddam Hussein as Satan's sex-crazed gay lover. image
  • O'k Newsman, I thought about it, when I looked at your link, just the film's name you have mentioned seems to be similair to that I mean.

  • Satootoko, I have one like that one in the left, made from silver and very nice! But the problem is that on all these dreidels have written

    "there" and not "here" !

NOW I know why some coins have holes in them!! image It's certainly a neat item! I've never seen a coin made into a top before -- but Satoo is right, it's not a dreidel and shame on the Israeli Mint for not knowing that!!

Oh, and Happy Birthday, Nickolai!! imageimageimage
    Askari

Come on over ... to The Dark Side! image
  • Thanks, Mark it was a few weeks ago! As for the holes, I also thought about it , when I saw it firstly. Israeli Coins and Medals Goverment Co. likes to make some unusual, and I say, sometimes, strange things with the coins...image
