I need a U.K. 1/2 Penny Expert Thanks everyone.

I know I've posted this coin before but, I would like to try to find out more about this (error?) BEFORE I sell it!
Does anyone know someone who's an expert on U.K. Errors and Half Pennies?
I can't find anything on the net about this (Error?)
Something like this had to be done at the mint, rightimage
Thank you,
Glenn

Glenn, I think there are a few experts on these boards who might be able to help you, among them Lloyd, Wybrit, MacCrimmon, LordMarcovan, Aethelred and some others.

I know practically nothing about British coins, especially errors and varieties, but while looking at your coin, I can't help but notice a prominent gash to the left of the date, and a mark on the 1, as well as on the 7. I would surmise that something hard and sharp scraped your coin along the edge, and thus scraped away that part of the 8.

I know you'd rather hear it straight than someone prevarocating about the bush....

The coin is the result of damaged or claggy dies and I believe it is of little value to a collector. Another thing is that it's low grade. Yet another thing is that there are two 1879 Freeman varieties and this is the more common of the two".

However, if you put it on Ebay under World / Errors you may get a result and DOUBLE list with halfpennies you may capture the best of both. Worthwhile if starting low with no reserve.

    TRY THIS

    "1879 HALFPENNY F339 - UNRECORDED ERROR"
"Freeman 339 (15+O) rated R9. Scarcer date and unrecorded error. Lower grade but almost certainly rare.... "I've consulted several British Copper Specialists and none can come up with an explanation". etc etc etc.

I actually collect bronze halfpennies and I saw the last thread on this coin. Believe me, if it was rare or desirable you would have heard from me before now.

So I was mistaken about it being a damaged coin. If Lloyd recognizes it as a damaged die variety, then it obviously happened at the mint. So list it like Lloyd suggests and hope for the moon!!!

Glenn, I think it would serve you well to put in a link to your ebay items in your signature line.

It would be hard to get that 8 stretched AFTER the minting process.... You could damage it but not deform it. With the gash on the left it looks like it's been caught and dragged out.... I'm no expert on the minting process but this seems logical.

And it would be and idea to link to auctions, Glenn.... Make the most of it...

  • Thanks Lloyd and Jester,
Your right. Tell me straight! I'm trying to learn here.

Lloyd, I agree with you about the dragged 8; the cut out piece wouldn't be connected to the underlying metal. In a scan, however, it's impossible to tell if that extra metal is hanging there or firmly attached.

It's definitely firmly attached. That's why I thought it was an error.

I agree with the other experts who've weighed in already.
