1873 New York Token??

I got this coin for a couple bucks, but I don't think it's American. It looks like a British coin to me, but I have no idea what kind. I can't tell the difference between a penny and a half penny.

  • that's actually a British Halfpenny of George II, dating between 1730-39!
  • That's interesting! How can you tell? I can see George II, but I can't tell that it's a half penny. Anyway, the edges look a bit beat up, so it's probably not worth much. Thanks for the help, Coachleonard.
  • The George II farthing has a certain style to it, as far as what George's head looks like. Your coin
has the 'Young Head' style used on George II halfpennies up through 1739, after which, they turned to
    'Old Head' styles of 1740-59.
  • Thank you again. I'll have to learn more!

As Coach mentioned, that was the last year for the "Young Head" George II portrait.

Dunno what they were smoking when they came up with the "1873 New York Token", bit, but who cares?

It's worth only $2 in VG, according to Krause, so if you believe the catalog, you overpaid a little, since that's not quite VG and a little beat up. HOWEVER, let me add that I think the Krause is way too low on 18th century British and French copper, so while you don't have an extremely valuable find there, it's worth at least what you paid, if not a little more (in the real world if not in the catalog).

BTW, how is it that someone who doesn't recognize a George II halfpenny ends up outsniping ME on a high-end proof, slabbed Jamaican halfpenny, hmm? image

  • Well, sir, I wasn't the only one who sniped you! I was just the highest sniper. I'm an uberbidder anyway, so just because I snipe doesn't mean I know jack about the value of the coins I buy...imageimage
