1968 Canada mint set

I've become interested in Canadian coins, for some reason. However, I don't know much about them. I just bought this mint set. Did I do well on price? By the way, what's the difference between mint and proof and the SP I see on some slabs? Thanks for your help.

Once, I got from him very nice explanations about these things!!

  • Wow! This is actually a 1964 set so 4 of the coins are silver! Yot it for $2 which is great.

The dollar commemorates the Charlottetown accord where the 'fathers of confederation' first decided to form the dominion of Canada.
  • Canada didn't start to produce 'proof' coins until 1971. Before them you've got 'proof-like' coins which I think are sometimes slabbed as 'specimin'
  • Thank you very much for the information, Darkhorse and Shipcoin. I didn't even realize it's a 1964 set. When did they stop making silver coins? I know it was 1964 in the US.
  • They stopped making silver coins for the most part in 1967 BUT the Canadian 25¢ and 10¢ coins had a short run in silver in 1968. The silver in the 1968 coins is 50% silver, 50% copper.
  • Thanks again, Darkhorse. I like your icon!

You're wandering into misty parts of the Greyside young Jedi!

"Prooflike" coins, such as are in the sets you bought, are struck on select planchets on slower moving machinery for a better finish. They are also not bagged, so they come with fewer nicks than business strikes.

Specimens are one step up with special planchets struck twice with special dies to make superior coins (usually with an even mirrored finish).

Canada didn't strike proofs until they got the necessary machinery to make proofs of the Olympic $5 and $10 silver coins from 1973 on. They didn't strike proofs of dollars and lower denominations until 1981. These have highly frosted devices for a cameo effect. IMHO, the RCM produces some of the best struck collector coins in the world.

    Hetman,

Welcome to the grey side! I recommend you purchase a copy of The Charlton Catalogue - it is the Canadian version of the Redbook. Just remember that the values in it are in Canadian funds.

  • Mr. Wybrit, you stay away from my Canadian coins and I'll try to stay away from those British ones, OK?!
  • You did great, Hetman. I see them on Ebay usually going for about $5.00 US.

Good job on that mint set (and the other one too), Hetman. Welcome to our twisted little corner of the world!! You'll enjoy yourself here. Try not to mind all the strange personalities, either; most of them have barks worse than their bites.
