Honduras 1 Centavos

1957 KM#77.2 - 15mm
1974 KM#77a - 16 mm (measured not mentioned in my Krause)
I found it curious that the 1974 was 1 mm larger.

Beautiful coins, Newbie!! It's amazing what you're finding in those bank bags.

  • Well these actually came from a collection I bought from a fella about 2 years ago. A big collection and I have still not looked thru all of them....image

  • The 2 centavos also increased in size, from 20 to 21 millimeters, at that time.

  • When a later version is identical except for smaller size, we say the currency has been "debased".

    Has this coin been "deatticed"?image

  • Interesting that it points out a mistake in the Krause (at least the one I have). The KM77.1s (thick planchet) are listed at 2.0g and 15mm, which matches the US mint report. The 77.2s (thin planchet) are listed at 1.50g and 16mm, but the mint report has them at 1.50g and 15mm for the 1956 and 1957 coins. It makes me wonder if the 1954s are actually different than the '56/'57s, since they were made at some other mint.

It looks like every time they switched mints there was some kind of change. You can see this in the 5 centavos, also. All of the KM72.1s were made in Philly and Denver and the 72.2s were made somewhere else. The 1974 coin also fits the pattern. It's a slightly modified design, on a different planchet, and a different mint than the last ones made (1957).

You can see from this page where the designs from the RCM came in.

  • They are fine examples of a neat Hondurus design.

Pretty coppers, Newbie. Almost thought they were San Marino. Somewhat similar anyway, from my feeble memory that is. image
  • MacCrimmon..... Did you say feeble? I don't think so, not in your case anyway.

Just a couple of coins I found in my stash, and I could see "with my little eye" they were not the same size. Now that sounds like a feat I could not normally do, but they do "look" a different size in hand...image
