Look what I bought!

Sorry the picture isn't great, but here's a description:

A Silver Cup and Cover set with coins: a large Victorian silver two-handled cup and cover, hallmarked London 1884 with maker's mark JBH, the inside of the base inscribed: This Cup and Cover weighing oz 61.8 was made to preserve 44 Coins of English History, the cup with 36 silver coins (representing one of each monarch (not always accurately), identified with the monarch's name and accessional date engraved above and below each piece) set into the body of the cup, and broadly comprising pennies of William I to Edward II, groats of Edward III to Henry VIII (the groats of 'Henry IV' and 'Henry V' are in fact both of Henry VI), shilling of Edward VI sixpences of Mary and Elizabeth I, shilling of James I, halfcrown of Charles I, shilling of the Commonwealth and halfcrowns of Oliver Cromwell to William IV, the domed cover set with 8 silver Victorian coins of Britain and her Colonies, comprising florins (2), East India Company rupee, British Indian rupees (2), half-dollar of Hong Kong and 50 cents (2) of Canada and Newfoundland, all arranged around an Heraldic Lion holding the British Coat of Arms which is removable by means of unscrewing an 1887 crown fixed inside the lid, 15 ins. high, 13.5 ins wide, wt. 2.08 kg., in very fine condition E1500-2000 Since the cup includes a crown of 1887, it may well have been assembled to mark Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee.

    Interesting item... I'm alittle surprised to see Cromwell coins or even coins from the days of the Commonwealth on it if it is associated with the 50th anniversary of Queen Victoria on the Throne...

    I have never seen anything like it before and probably never will again.

    Yes, I see how well they are preserving the coins, in FDC condition.image Still, it's a cool piece. I've seen others like that, with other types of coins, including gold coins. Usually only in museums.

    ASKARI MIA! That's one cool piece. If my wife ever wanted to buy a silver cup like that or a samovar with coins on it, I might actually agree with her.
