A year of progress in Memorial Lincolns

Over this year there has been a lot of progress made in the modern Lincolns.

First off there has been an additional 14,471 coins added to the total graded by PCGS.

424 have graded in MS69RD
Notable additions: 1984 (1)*, 1985-D (2), 1990-D (1), 1992 (1), 1992-D (2), 1993 (1)*

3904 graded MS68RD
Notable additions: 1968-S (1)*, 1977 (1), 1979 (2), 1989(4)* along with many dozen in the 80’s & 90’s.

2652 graded MS67RD
Notable additions: 1960-D (1)*, 1969 (1), 1971-S (5)*, 1972-S (13)*, 1973-D (2)*.

* denotes the first one for that date.

Some interesting anomalies
1966 lost a MS68RD ?
1969-S DDO lost a MS65RD ?

Some other news about Errors
1969-S DDO had 2 coins added in BN (circulation finds? Are there more out there?)
1970-S DDO added 2BN and 1 RB (more circulated coins)
1971 DDO added 9BN and 4RB coins (look for these too not many known)

All in All a very healthy year for modern Lincoln’s, A lot of growth.

Those are some hectic numbers for totals and crazy to see some of those highest pops on dates that were thought to be really, really tough.

That 1969-S DDO with its thin grade distribution is threatening to become the most distrorted date of any denomination when comparing the report to coins that are actually in PCGS slabs. What were the added numbers for MSxxRD 1971 DDO...I thought that four of the eight MS64RD were made by two board members/deceased vegetables this year.

So who all is in favor of encouraging PCGS to rework the registry weights for both MS sets? How about adding the 1998-2000 Wide AM to the variety set when they add the 2003 dates?

Of course it would be nice if PCGS started slabbing the seven 1982 varieties before I get too old to see whether they are small or large date. First 1982...then maybe try to get them to split the 1974 dates into large and small date varieties.

...there are a few more varieties that I would love to see get recognized by them too, but more on that some other day.

All those varieties (and types)would seem to be naturals!

While the '74 may not be as important as some of the other varieties, they would help
differentiate the quality differences between roll coins and mint set coins since all mint
sets contain the large dates. The only reason they've gotten so little attention is that
they were made in near equal numbers.

I've long suspected that there weren't as many of these mid-'70's cent rolls as are ap-
parent. If true then a lot of the coins for collections will have to come from mint sets and
the small date will be tougher than generally assumed.

  • I'd like to encourage all the new Memorial collectors that have come on board. I'd like to meet more of the new collectors and see some of their sets.

One of the board members owned the 1966 MS68RD SMS that was improperly labeled. Hard to believe it was so difficult to get that one fixed.
I thought Stewart Blay was theowner of the 1969-S DDO in MS65RD. Maybe he will know a bit more about that one.
I scored one of the 1969-S DDO from circulation. My best pocket change find ever.

I would love to see the new varieties added and the complete set reweighted. Don't know who PCGS would get to help with the new weights. I'd like to see the wide am variety weight values evaluated after a year to make sure the actual rarity is understood.

As an active modern penny collector I vote to include the wide AM's, and several DDO's, DDR's and the 1992d Close AM to the pot. I don't understand why it is so hard to get anything new included into the PCGS world. If things continue to stagnate in these areas more coins head to NGC, SEGS etc. They are very receptive to new varieties. Many of my dollars have went across the street because of the PCGS inflexability in the error arena. I know several big players on the boards feel the same way. image
