Art Treasures of the Vatican

A dealer near me is selling these 1 oz. Sterling Silver medals for a mere $10 CAD, so I had to treat myself. He has about 75 different ones. I might have to go back again, to feed my addiction.

Trozau, that's good! It's beyond me what it says on the back of the medal.

I don't know, but what I'd surmise is that the reverse lists first the name of the saint, then the sculptor, then the location, which in this case would be St. Peter's Basilica (Vatican).

I remembered seeing the marble sculpture of St Longinus in St Peter's Basilica when we visited Rome, so I did a google search of 'St Longinus Bernini' and found the photo to link.

hetman, your sig line says: "Follow the Golden Rule."

Is it the original golden rule or the one according to goldbugs (He who has the gold, makes the rules.). image

  • Mr. Trozau, I am talking about the Golden Rule about treating others as you'd want them to treat you. However, I suppose it could be a play on words, and therefore appropriate on a coin forum. I definitely like your sig line and handle! I think that Socialist Keynes was an idiot and elitist, so I have no respect for him and his assertion about gold being worthless. I guess gold was so worthless that FDR decided to confiscate all of it from the citizens.image

I figured you meant it was the 'do unto others...' but I just couldn't resist. So, I read in a previuos thread that you've been giving the Brit coin collectors a stiff competition. image

Monnaie de Paris did a 100F (?) series similar to these on the Treasures of the Louvre, but if St. Longinus is representative of this series, these medals seem nicer in terms of engraving and presentation. Are there more pictures or sources available?
