Gold Ducats

I am looking for a decent 16th century gold ducat. How much have they gone up in price with the recent move in gold prices? Any reputable dealers? Steinbergs? Or would auctions be a better route?

Thanks for the links, Wayne. I have been watching ebay for a while, there are quite a few listed. They go for quite a premium above melt, some could be counterfeit.

I have no knowledge about these at all. I just did a quick eBay search.

THere's a link in a current Lightside thread entitled "Palladium and Platinum" where you can find some very cool ducats. I'm extremely tempted myself but can't afford to right now. If I had the money, I'd grab the one year Venitian ducat, or the rarer counter-stamped ducat.

I don't know much about what you are looking at, but Steinbergs has been very good the times I have bought from them, and their things I do look at have seemed fairly priced. If they had something I wanted (and I had any more spending money left ...) I would feel fine buying from them.

Unfortunately, we're pretty much wiped out on common 16th century ducats at the moment. We've got a 15th century ducat with a date on it, but it's quite rare. I think we're getting a small group of ducats sometime in the next few weeks if you want to check back with us.

I didn't see the ducats in the thread that Jester mentioned, but I can tell you unless it's severely impaired, you probably won't be seeing a 16th century ducat for anywhere near melt.
