If you have any questions about coins from the Netherlands.......

....I really would like to answer some of your questions, just for me to see if I know a bit about them. I have been collecting dutch coins now for almost 8 years, and still love them:-)

Anyone?

Thanks for the offer, Dennis! I don't really have any questions at the moment, but now I know where to go.

Are you interested in buying more Dutch coins? I think maineantiquetreasures is selling some on ebay now.

Brad, If you want a 1 c 1940, I can visit my coin shop and buy it there. Might take a while, but I will try to get the best quality possible. It is not a rare coin.

In EF, a price from $5 looks fair to me, and that's including shipping and handling.

    LMK what you think.

Gene, not understanding your question very well, can you specify it a bit more?

gdjmsp, its quite a long list but here we go.....

I can go further back till 1795, but I started with the kingdom from 1814.

1814-1816 are not really rare coins all worth about $600 in BU.
the other gold ducats from king Willem 1 are almost all rare, especcially these:

    -1817 U (means Utrecht)
    -1820 U
    -1821 U
    -1822 U
    -1824 B (means Brussel)
    -1825 B
    -1827 B
    -1828 over 1827 U
    -1829 over 1828 U
    -1829 B
    -1830 B
    -1836 over 1835 Utrecht

From Willem 2, only types minted, both not rare.

From Willem 3 all dates (1849-1885) are very rare, except 1849. There is a little story about this coin.

The Netherlands Gold Ducats were very popular, especcially in Russia. Almost all dates were quite a lot times imitate, without having differences. In the previous years, those minting was very low, but that changed in 1849. Totally 4.764.344 coins were minted, with 4.500.000 coins in Russia, again without differences.

From Wilhelmina, all dates from 1894 till 1916 and 1932 are rare, and command prices between $1200 and $3000.

From Juliana, who reigned 1948-1980, there is only one date rarer then others, 1960. It had a mintage of only 3.605 coins. there is also a variant from the 1974 coin, which is struck in medal allignment. There are about 2000 pieces known to exist.

1976 is also scarce, with a mintage of 37.844, and 32.000 were melted at the mint.

    Hope this helps,

    Dennis

  • How easy is it to obtain Louis Napoleon material (as King of Holland) there in the Netherlands? Here in the States it's fairly scarce and always expensive. Thanks.

What coins does one actually see in circulation and what sort of condition have they been in for the last five years.

The coins we saw before 2002 were mainly the 70's 80's and 90's. The other years were most times already putted in pots and people now finding them (and sometimes give them to me:-)
The quilaty's of those coins was quite good in comparison with the euro's now.

The 1 c was placed out in circulation in 1981, And the 5 guilder was used quite a lot. The other coins just as normal.

At the moment, still 80% what I have in my pocket are dutch euro's. Than the country's wo are close to Holland, especcially France and Belgium (totally 10%) I have about 5% france euro's in my wallet. The other 5% are the other country's.

I rarely see coins from country's like Ireland and Greece. Quite a lot people collect euro's (I personally not, really hate them) so they save the other country's for there personal "collection" are for family, friends etc.

    Cheers,
    Dennis

Thanks for the info. When were the older coins removed from circulation? I assume it was
a gradual process that required several years. Were these coins pretty worn when they began
    to disappear?

Did you see many of the newer coins still in nice shape like nearly uncirculated?

I had the same question as HG image

Mevius and NVMH are good ones. If you want one for only colonial issues, you have to by the "scholten" catologue".

Thanks for the info Dennis. I suspected that the King Ludwig stuff would be expensive, just not that expensive! image

His medals from the same period are pricey though too, even the later restrikes bring premiums. image

    Hi Dennis,

Concerning the copper and silver issues of Wilhelmina; how difficult are these to obtain in true uncirculated conditions?

About 3 years ago I bought a 1c dated 1896 which is a nice red and brown unc., but I seldom see many here in the US.

    Thanks for your input. Mac
  • Dennis88Dennis88 Posts: 5,797 ✭✭✭
Not really difficult, if you know the good dutch dealers. We have other grading standards:

    fraai-Fine
    Zeer fraai-Very fine
    Prachtig-extremely fine
    ongecirculeerd-Uncirculated
    FDC-Brilliant uncirculated

    That's all.

If you need any good ones, contact this dealer
    Theo Peters e-mail

They have almost everything, speak english and ship internationally.

    cheers,
    Dennis
  • Do you know a good dealer for colonial issues: one that does not ask for a kidney in return?
