Vicky never looked better!

Is this coin even real???

I must say, I've never seen this exact portrait before. What are the chances that this coin is counterfeit?

  • Thank you, Mr. Laurentyvan! I missed out on some other really nice Canadian tokens and cents last night from the same seller, because they had the auctions spaced out every 10-15 seconds and I couldn't keep up. But this one I got. I just wonder if it's real because Vicky looks so funky.image

The portrait on the coin is consistent with the coin pictured in Krause-she does look a little different, doesn't she? Not the first time I've seen these differences on the maritime issues. As to whether or not it's counterfeit, seems like a lot of trouble for a few dollars...

    Nice token Hetman,

It's real. Catalogued in Charlton's Canadian Colonial Tokens as NS-2C and Breton 873. There are 3 varieties, depending on fringes of hair behing the ear. Yours looks like the 7 fringe variety (most common) values F $12CAD, VF $30CAD. The 5 fringe variety is F $25CAD, VF $60CAD and the 4 fringe variety is F $60CAD, VF $125.

    edited to add mintage 150,000
    crude cast forgeries are known
also the rare 4 fringe variety is a medal strike, the others are coinage strikes.

  • I find the various Canadian province tokens interesting. I have a couple represented in my Canadian folder.

Interesting piece. It looks a bit like a forerunner of the monkey/jubilee head of 1887-1893.

Nonetheless it's another shrewd buy for hetman.

  • Thanks for all the info, folks! You people are really helpful.
  • I love the early Canadian provincial tokens. Congrats, hetman!
