PCGS grading error!

I have a 2001 $10 gold eagle in PCGS MS69, but the label describes the coin as a 2000. PCGS has earned a well deserved reputation as the #1 most reliable and consistent third party grading service, but someone really was asleep at the helm on this one. This is a one-of-a-kind grading error, I've searched the halls of ebay for months, and have never seen another! My price for this beauty is $2500.00, though I suspect PCGS would be willing to shell out far more than that just to make this embarrasment go away! Credibility is the single most important factor to a grading service. Imagine... -PCGS with a credibility issue? Unthinkable! Yet here is this coin, which was submitted to PCGS and graded by an individual whose sole purpose is to accurately describe this coin ----ooops!

I think such errors are actually pretty common. I've seen wrong mintmarks, 1909 vdb penny's that had no vdb...
  • Ok, so the PLASTIC has an error. How is the COIN? That's what counts!!

Mechanical errors such as this, although a bit embarrassing maybe to PCGS do not draw the premium you are requesting via the Collector.

I've got a few of these myself and they're fun as a novelty, but unfortunutely PCGS (and the other Services) make this type of error often enough so as to warrant a grin and a snicker instead of outrage and shock and disbelief.

I have a slabbed 1939 DDR Jefferson nickel. The PCI slab saya it is a 1938 DDR.

  • Someone made a mistake. It happens. They're human. If you contact them and tell them they goofed, I bet they will tell you to send the coin back and they'll reseal it with the right date at no charge.

They're not gonna pay $2500 to "to make this embarrasment go away" though. Please tell us you didnt really think thats true. Have they lost credibility? No. You said it exactly right. "oops".
  • Let's see it....... post a scan so we can "enjoy"

No they wouldn't. It happens once in a while, I've had a few myself. Send it back with a note saying "mechanical error" and get it reholdered for free.

Then again, for some reason, I don't think that this will be the path this individual will take. There's always ebay! I'll look forward to the link when it's running. It's always fodder for a good laugh.

Yes, I probably was being less than polite, but PCGS putting the wrong sticker in the holder doesn't increase the value of the coin inside or the holder itself. It's highly unlikely you will get anyone to bite here. Perhaps you should try ebay.

imageThree-count them T H R E E errors as of late #1- NGC coin sent in for cross/was given PCGS certification # indicating(duh) it crossed-coin comes back to me STILL in the NGC slab! Bummer #2) For months I've had in my registry set what was labeled a PCGS 66 1944-S...NOT! Turns out the coin is a 46-S #3) (To my advantage) Being the vast majority of my Registry Set is comprised of MS 66's I scoff up what is marked as a PCGS 63 1946-P, the coin is no 63...it's a 66-fits right in with all the other 66s-only not is it graded improperly-it,too, has been labeled improperly! It is no "P" at all...it's an "S"! According to DH's "challenge" do these qualify as "bagging" PCGS.? To me, it's a sign of overworked/understaffed crew trying to work as quickly as they can in which cases these errors are inevitable. Too much work- not enough graders! They are strained to the breaking point!
  • A mechanical error like wrong date is worth the price of sending in the slab to be corrected. wrong date on insert is worth ZERO!!! your coin is worth around $110. PM me when you get your head out of the clouds. I'll even pay $3.99 in shipping. My offer $113.99. and you're lucky to get that. why not send to PCGS, they will fix for FREE. I see from the # of posts you're a real seasoned veteran collector image. Your price is ridculous and shows your inexperience in numismatics. So PM me and I'll send you $113.99.

You might want to purchase a book on rarities and show us where and how you determined the price on mechanical errors. Bet you $1000 not listed as an error or rare coin. image

  • Obsurd!!!! Buy the Red book and read about collecting Rare coins and don't forget to give us the book you used to determine a typo is worth $2,500!!! Maybe you should send to ACG they probably will attribute the typo if you tell them the grade and send them extra money to slab this joke!!! Might want to join the ACG Forum, many collectors are experienced as you and may pay stupid money for a typo!! Good luck!!

  • Well, I apparently have a lot to learn about coins and grading services. Thanks for all your kind words. By the way, tgilliams, it's spelled "ridiculous" and "absurd". It shows your inexperience with words, and I really hate for you to look so inept. image

You would probably do better teaching grammar to a crowd that cares. You appear to be better at grammar than coins and come backsimage

In my "Boo-boo" box, I have a $5 gold AGE that says "PR69"..
It's really an MS69... It's my 2nd gold slab with a mechanical error. I have 18 others, with similar errors too!

image I had 3 boo-boos withina month-1) spent $30 to cross a NGC 32-D Quarter to PCGS. Was emailed verifying that it did cross/given new cert#...coin shows up still in NGC slab AWWW 2) For a little over a month ,in my Registry Set was what was labeled a PCGS 66 1944-S Quarter-turns out it's a 46-S MMM 3) Saw this one coming and grabbed it-Quarter labeled 1946 PCGS 63-NOT, it's another 46-S and it's a 66 not a 63! Too much work -not enough workers! Not a good time for accuracy! Boo- Hiss!
