Vending Boxes

I am looking at buying a 1980 Topps box and would like to know if vending boxes are the best way to get high grade examples. How do they compare to wax, rack or cello packs?

Any success stories out there?

    Neal:

When I broke open a case back in the day -- I got primarily 8s and 9s on my submissions. No Henderson 9s unfortunately. The potential problem with single boxes is that you may get a perimeter box, which is more susceptible to damage. I do not have adequate experience with wax, rack or cello, though.

Thanks Marc - I saw the Rose PSA 10 on eBay, and it got me thinking.

  • I opened one of my wax boxes about a month ago and it was rather bad. I offered another one of my boxes on eBay and got $280 for it. Needless to say the box I opened was worth more unopened.

I cracked 5 boxes of vending about 8 years ago from 1980. Got 4 hendersons, 3 8's 1-9 and . I opened one wax box of 80 recently and got a henderson with surface damage from the gum. I have had pretty good luck with vending but only buy them from top sources that will be pulling them from cases. baseballcardexchange, mark murphy. I bought most of my 80's stuff back then from bocacards in FL , not sure if they still keep stock in this stuff. Idid buy an 83 vending out of boredom a few months back and pulled 2 boggs and 2 gwynns in 1 box, all were o/c but the boxes were clean so centering was the only issue

I've opened 2 1/2 vending cases of 1980 Topps. The half I bought from baseball card exchange and 1 case from Mark Murphy. The case from Murphy produced about 10 Henderson 9's and all the rest I opened produced 0 9's. I got tons of 9's on other stuff but the main thing is to limit your 8's. You will lose money on them. As for PSA 10's, I averaged somewhere around 1 per 2 boxes, but that is based on 60 boxes. The first 2 PSA 10 Brett's came from me along with the first Rose HL, first 2 Joe Morgans, Dale Murphy, Dave Concepcion, plus some commons and others I can't remember. Racks produce the nicest cards but vending gets you the most bang for the buck. I still buy racks occasionally but I would probably only buy single vending boxes from a reputable source or I would look for a sealed case.

I still like rack boxes/cases the best if you're going to look for high-grade singles. Sure high-end stuff can be found from vending, but I feel it's less consistent than rack.

if you do racks, I would only recommend sealed cases. It is possible to get the patterns and a case is the only sure way to know that it is clean

packcollector> I think regardless of what sort of unopened material you want, the absolute number one priority HAS to be buying from a trusted source.

Well now is a good time to part with your Henderson's espically in PSA 9 quality. It looks to me the fellow who was buying them all up has started to pull back a little while a few have gone under the 300 mark.

Steve,I have a very Beautiful Brett of yours in my about Me page and is my Rose #4 HL the one your talking about?I don't remember ever getting a card from you with a zero cert #.

Neal, all the heavy bulk submitters seem to be getting the 10s.I know Roger has been very conservative with his picks always shooting for 10s from 1980 or he doesn't submit.

I'd like to open a few Wax boxes too but have been reluctant due to the majority of horror stories I've heard from guys like GoBoSox (Tom).Plus at the time I was looking for unopened material nobody seemed to have any.Oh well...

Mike , I wasn't saying you don't need to know your sources on ALL unopened material, just saying that vending has to coming from a case or you are bound to get burned. with wax, you can buy single packs, or boxes that are not in cases , vending there is no leway in my book. I would never buy vending outside of the main dealers, wax I will buy any time the conditions are right from whoever meaning a return policy , credit card payment , etc. anything fishy and I walk no matter what the justification is, unfortunately I have learned that through experience.

Anyone here looking for '81 Fleer? A store near me has 2 vending boxes of that available cheaply.
