I've had it with ebay sellers who

won't take paypal and then won't ship your cards until it has been two weeks or more since they received payment. DSL is one of the worst, although they eventually come through. I sent them payment for cards that cleared my bank on Nov 24, but they still haven't shipped.

Another seller cashed my check on Nov. 25, and it cleared my Bank after the Holiday on Dec 1. I emailed him today when my cards hadn't come to ask about them. He replied that he will ship them in the next couple of days after the check clears!! This is a seller I have bought from numerous times before.

If you are not going to take paypal, you should at least ship the cards quickly, particularly when the seller has good feedback. A check will bounce w/i 2-3 days of being cashed nowadays.

I will no longer be bidding iin these sellers auctions unless it is a card that I "have to have".

DSL alway ships promptly to me and I always send them a personal check. It's the 7.25% sales tax that kills me with them.

DSL Sports has always been great with me. I've dealt with them probably at least once a month for the last couple of years. On my last two orders, I mailed payment for order #1 on Nov 18th and received the cards on Dec 2nd, and then I mailed payment for order #2 on Nov 26th and just received the card today. Not bad, considering Thanksgiving weekend was right in the middle of both!

I think the fastest I've ever received an order from DSL was 7 days from my mailing payment, to receiving the cards. That's real good, considering that I live in Montana!

I do really wish they would take Paypal though. Oh yes, I have always paid DSL with a personal check.

My last order w/ DSL was for 58 lots, it seemed I waited forever to get the UPS package. I'm sure a good part of the time was in transit, DSL waiting for my coast to coast payment and I waiting for the coast to coast delivery. I've dealt w/ them over a dozen times and would appreciate quicker service too!...jay
  • Bw,

I feel your pain, dsl always ships mine asap even when paying with a check.

Story I have is I got my first neg the other day. Seller payed for card sent it get and email 2 weeks later saying he never got it. Even though I state not responsible for lost merchandise I ship him a replacement not telling him in advance what I did, just a non shalant thing no biggy I have 10 of the card he bought low and behold the jerk off negs me just after I leave him feedback. First one for 4000 uniques.

  • Buckwheat,

Please keep in mind, not all banks are alike in their policies for check cashing and funds on hold. For instance my bank never puts any check I cash on hold. All funds are immediately available. So I have no idea when a check actually clears. I've asked my bank, "So how do I know this check won't bounce?" And there reply was, "Well you should know in 7-10 days".

So just because you can see a check has cleared, doesn't mean the payee can.

Plus most auctions specifically state checks are help 7-10 days, not checks held until they clear. In fact I ship specifically based on the date I deposit the check, and nothing else.

    And I do take PayPal......

  • I agree, I know longer even bother buying from people who only take checks or money orders. Paypal only for me unless it is a non-ebay transaction. Fairway 54 is the worst. DSL is pretty bad too (as in taking forever to send cards). For awhile Fairway 54 had a lot of Redman cards I was interested in, but I let them go by since I had a bad experience with them regarding communication and shipping times. Plus they didn't even leave me feedback when I promptly sent them the check. I didn't neg them, just didn't leave them feedback as well. I guess some buyers don't care if they lose out on some potential customers by not taking Paypal. And no, it's not because I'm too lazy to write out the checks or go get the money order, it's just way more convenient with Paypal and I can keep track of transactions better with Paypal as well.

I think DSL does a tremendous job considering the amount of volume they have....there are a bunch of other guys out there who are much, much worse.

  • GriffinsGriffins Posts: 6,076 ✭✭✭
I just started selling extras this year on ebay, and if the amount is low (25. or less) or if it is someone I've dealt with before (or someone that posts here or Net 54 regularly) I just ship as soon as I get payment. My bank won't tell me when a check clears, they just said that if I haven't heard in 10 working days then it is probably good. Kinda "no news is good news"
DSL has been good with me- they email a day or two after I mail the check (they are about 30 miles south of me, so it's pretty quick) and ship the same day. I just wish they would sell directly- I've asked on numerous occasions but they have never replied, and I don't think they do the local Hollywood Park shows. Fairway seems to take weeks to ship-all things being equal I tend to give them a pass.
IMHO Paypal is well worth taking as a seller- I end auctions on a Sunday nite and about half of them are paid for when I get in on Monday morning. It costs a bit more, but I think it increases bidding, more than negating the cost.

I just received 6 lots from fairway54. The good was that they allowed combined shipping over multiple days of wins. The bad was that they took well over a week to ship after being paid with a money order, and did not leave feedback until I did (although their feedback was up within a half hour of my leaving feedback).
I'm still happy, because the cards were mainly high end for the grade (and it's not like I can afford to ignore one of the biggest sellers of '40 Play Ball if I want to work on that set).

Gotta put in a good word for DSL here.

Great scans, and you know going in that they don't accept paypal.
Plus, you can wat weeks to checkout, which can end up making your per card shipping cheap.

Kudos to DSL for all the graded cards they've offered over the last few years.
I, for one, appreciate them, and have no problem looking for my cards about 2 weeks afer I've mailed them a check ...

  • DSL's policy is that they will ship orders under $500 with a personal check to someone with good feedback right away. Orders over $500 they will wait until the check clears. I don't like that but if I'm in a hurry then I'll get a money order for larger orders.

Fairway54 recently made me mad and I left my first nuetral feedback ever. They charge $5 for shipping a single card and then send it in a 60 cent bubble mailer. I emailed them about this and got no response. I now pass on his auctions.

I agree with you on the on paypal issue. However, I;ve done a lot of deals with DSL and they've continually been the quickest turn around I've had for a check only deal. Really, for the volume they do they aren't that bad.

But in general....people need to take paypal.

  • John,

Well excuzme is a local guy (xgirlfriend dad) that I used to list for a fee. I cut him loose in late july for the reasons of he didn't have the cash to grade what should be graded and my collection was just sitting here. When I'd ask him to sell a card to me he always felt that I was trying to get him so that really urked me. So I cut him loose and now I can buy from him on ebay. Low and behold he'd wish on a few occasions should have sold them outright.

He's a nice guy, I guess when you have a supply of of nice raw cards within 10 miles of you I'd like to be able to have a chance at buying them, instead of spending all the time combing through what should be graded and shouldn't then having to explain to him why you sent a card in that came back a 7 which would have been a low pop in 8. He's just knew to the system and no amount of money can explain what psa has done to the industry.

So Gator05 is me and my father that is where I buy and sell. I no longer run the show for excuzme he does have some nice stuff and anyone that needs a heads up lmk and I can check it out. Just for instance the 72 bench I picked up in an 8 should be in a 9 holder only reason I never sold it in the past was for that reason. Low and behold he listed it I asked him why he didnt crack it and the answer was takes to long.

    Thanks Gator

Yep....I just bought one card on Sunday from him.,..and as usual Im planning that he will ship it in the smallest bubble envelope with 60 cents postage on it. I hear he is one of the "self insurance" guys. After the first couple of burns I just adjust my bids accordinly if Im bidding on one card. Should get the card in 2 or 3 weeks. image

I've had some long waits with DSL but it doesnt bother me too much. ON the other hand, I've been banned from bidding on fairway54 for complaining about how long it took to receive a card. I have over 5300 positives from over 1500 people and it took forever to receive the card. Then I tried to bid on a card a few weeks later and I wasnt allowed to. I also left him positive feedback. Oh well. As for Paypal, I dont take it, I had a bad experiance with them and I just wont take it. I know of a few others who will say the same thing. It was a long time ago and maybe they have fixed things but thats how I feel. If buyers wont bid because of that, well its there loss not mine. I dont do this for a living so it really doesnt affect me too much. Bigger sellers maybe ought to use it or take CC, but then again its the sellers right to decide what payment methods he will accept, just as its a buyers right not to bid on sellers who dont. I think its silly not to buy a card because someone doesnt use paypal. Pay with a M.O. and you wont have to wait.
  • DSL is local to me and ships promptly. I have the old problem of charging $4.00 shipping via first class in a padded envelope. Priority Mail is $3.85 and the P.O. gives you the box for free! Like most of you, I adjust my bids according to shipping charges.

CREEPERKAT - DSL charges $4.00 for 1 lot, $6.00 for 2 lots and $8.00 for 3 or more lots. So anytime I win a card or two from them, I just let it ride and check out ther next 1000 auctions (sometimes 3 or 4 days worth) and keep bidding on anything I like, knowing full well, there will be no extra charge for shipping after the 3rd card. Its a great business plan by them, it made me win 58 lots last month (incl a set), so to pay just $8.00 for all that shipping was great. Currently, I've won about a dozen lots from them, and I'll see what else I can use within the next few days. With that in mind, I don't mind bidding $4.99 on an off grade card since there will be no shipping, if it was the only card I would win, then it would be $4.99 + $4.00.
I just take into account that the items I win will take a few weeks to arrive and I'm fine. If I win a card for a set registry project, I post the cert # right away so I don't duplicate the purchase soon after. Every card (around 300) I've won off of DSL has arrived in good shape, and none were overgraded, as was initially the thought on these boards about the big submitters...jay

You know,I was really relustant to bid on DSL auctions awhile back and regretfully passed on many great things.

Every dealing with them has been fantastic and I wound up talking with one guy from their operation(I forget his name) for about 1/2 hour when I had a question about a couple cards.

All cards I've acquired from DSL have been accurately graded and I'm pleased with everything about them. They've even shipped way before the 10 befroe checks must clear rule.

  • I love DSL, I'll join in this lovefest for them. They are one of few who offer high grade mid eighties football, without them I wouldn't have been able to land some of my gems. Keep up great work, first class fighter in my book.....

I rarely bid on people who don't take Paypal. Bob C and DSL are the exceptions. The convenience of Paypal is the determining factor for me. I think not taking it is a huge mistake. A fair number of people don't bid on these auctions and I think that costs more than the transaction fees.

  • Appreciate all of the inciteful posts. As I said in my original post, DSL is reliable, but I find them very slow. Probably being on the East coast makes a difference. Even when I pay with MO, it takes a while for mail to go both ways. As far as cutting them slack due to their volume, I don't see that. The more volume should require them to be more effecient. LLBean does way more volume, and I get their items in 2-3 days after ordering them.

53Kid--At long as you take paypal, then I don't care if you hold checks. You give me an option. And if you don't take paypal, that is a paiin, but I still don't mind so much if you don't hold my shipping for so long.

As far as how long it takes to get a bounced check--I still believe that it is 3 days max. Anyone with online banking access, which is readily available, can see the check bounce. When I was particularly concerned about a check, I called my bank, and they told me that if the funds weren't taken back within 2 days after deposit, the check had cleared. It may take a week to get mail notification, I suppose.

Gaspipe--It certainly your right to take whatever payment you want. Paying with paypal saves me so much time, and also avoids the old routine of I never received your check, etc. I will bid on items tht don't take paypal, but I won't bid as much. I usually send a MO to DSL, but it is not worth it this time of year to go wait in line at the post office, particularly when I have to take off of work to go. The hour it takes to drive their and wait, etc is just not worth it. Before someone says you can buy a MO at the local 7-11 etc., they only take cash. I don't usualy carry 500 to $1000 cash around, so I also have to go to the bank during banking hours to do this.

With paypal, I can pay minutes after an auction, the seller can ship the next day and have his end over, and I have the cards before DSL even receives my check. I'm happy, seller is happy, and I bid higher . It is just llike I don't usually go to a restaurant that won't take credit cards.

  • dsl's always been fast w/me- but i live in CA so that's likely why. i've had 2 cards end up getting scratched in transit from them and they replaced both promptly w/o hesitation or hassle. on the other hand, i recently won an auction (a whopping $15) from a seller who only takes money orders. i hadn't noticed that at the time but wished i had. the seller claims the first money order i sent got lost in transit (even though i never got it back and haven't gone to the post office to trace the whopping $15 money order). so i said i'd mail him $ after turkey day. i wasn't able to do so right away due to work obligations. seller finally emails me saying 'if i don't get the $ by overnight mail i'm filing a Npb w/ebay and leaving you a negative.' mind you it's been less than 3 weeks since the auction ended. i ended up sending him the $ via overnight mail but of course still don't have the cards yet. after this experience (and a similar "i never got the $"- why does that happen only when I send $ orders for small amounts or concealed cash?), i'm only bidding on auctions where sellers take paypal...DSL being the sole exception. while their shipping's high, i usually buy 5-10 cards at a time from them and simply get the reduced rate. for a high volume dealer, they're far nicer than mr "send my whopping $15 NOW" seller.
  • I've got a new winner now. Fairway54 isn't so bad compared to cardmrchnt@ao.com. Their shipping cost is $6.95 for a single card. I can just about drive from Indiana to California and pick it up for that. (Maybe I'm exaggerating just a bit)

I guess I need to pay more attention to the shipping before I bid. I'm also going to just flat out avoid these auctions entirely just out of principle. I get gouged all day long - I don't need it from ebay sellers also.

  • Buck... dsl is slow all the time for me, M.O. or check. (call and talk with "Shane", he moves things along).

I know the dealer you're really talking about. He's not going to get anymore of my business either. Won 2 psa 9's on the 20th of Nov. check cleared my bank on the 26th. Won another on the 27th, this time I sent a money order the next day. No cards yet. He's only a few hundred miles from both of use. Not across the country like dsl.

A comparison: I won 2 cards last night, paypal 5 minuets after the auction. Fairly large $$$ amount. I'll have the cards today Wednesday, Thursday at the absolute latest.

  • Hey John B:

I couldn't agree more about Fairway! I was a pretty good customer and I finally got pissed when he charged me $5 for shipping and sent it in a 20 cent bubble mailer (hell, I sell them 5 for a buck at shows) with 63 cents postage. So I called Bob and said what gives? I don't mind the $5 but at least send a $100 card in a USPS Priority envelope ($3.95) or maybe regular mail with $100 insurance! He said "read my auction guidelines. Don't like it? Don't bid!" So guess what? I will never never ever buy another card from Fairway! To boot, I left him negative feedback! He flipped out! So he negged me (my first) and then had some lame arbitration company email me, urging me to withdraw my neg feedback. I told them when he refunded my excess postage, I would be happy to.

PS Regarding the comment that he never leaves you positive feedback, I went back as far as I could in my feedback history, and guess what again??? He has never left me a positive feedback after maybe 25 good solid transactions!!!!!

  • I too had a problem with cardmrchnt@aol.com when it came to shipping fees. At least I got my card and positive feedback, so I cut my small loss on shipping fees.

  • The no feedback guy who takes forever that motocrosser is reffering to is zukeeper. I checked and he has left 14 feedback since Aug 1, while recieving about 80. Personally, that doesn't particularly bother me, and had never noticed until called to my attention. But the slow shipping and no paypal.........

I recently paid over $600 for a card and sent a personal check. I received the card in 4 days from a seller I don't believe I have ever dealt with. Peter Garcia is his name. He is a fellow collector. The strange thing is that it came in a priority video box, but just loose and rattling around. Fortunately, it wasn't damaged. I emailed him, and he was very apologetic. He said his secretary sent it out, and that is what she did. Since he collects high dollar pre war cards, I believe him.

I like cardmrchnt@aol.com (Poway Sports Cards). I have always gotten reasonably fast service from them (although I do live in southern CA and pay by money order). They do combine shipping with low (I think 50 cents) added charges for additional cards. If the high shipping cost scares off bidders, so much the better for me. I'll take a popular HOFer in PSA 5 for half SMR any day on a set I collect.

    Bob,

Be careful about merely deleting the email. The way it works is that if you don't respond with your side of the story within 2 weeks, they can delete the neg. I had a deal with Brunellfan on EBAY where he retaliated with a neg and I had it removed because he was unresponsive. I was out $20 for the "service"...but his neg got removed.
