Master Sets- what cards can be included?

can cards graded by PSA issued after a player's career is over be included in a Master Set? take any number of the recent game used cards of retired guys- should they be added to the master set as theyre graded, or does it just include cards issued during their careers?

just during their careers. The whole concept of master sets becomes increasingly ludicrous in any other instance....
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • thanks. i agree about the ludicrous aspect of post-career cards being included. even the modern player sets, where 800 or so cards are included are dumb. just because a run of the mill 1994 upper deck Jordan happened to be graded, doesnt mean it should be included in a set

While basic and master player sets should be limited to their playing days, I would like to have a post-career set option. I collect cards of Ruth, Mantle, Joe D., Gehrig, Musial, Cobb and Wagner (among others) and wouldn't mind having a registry entry for them. None of them are graded, and probably never will be, but if something was to come up, like a $1/card special, I'd probably send them in. Sure they aren't contemporary and there's no end to a collection like that, but unless you have a complete aversion to foil, when you flip through my "elite player" binder, I, for one, think it looks nice. I'll probably never have a "real" Ruth set, but I collect what I like of what I can afford.

Nothing would stop you from requesting that PSA create a set of (for example) HOFers who have had game-used cards issued, as long as you had at least 3 cert #s from that new set and could provide a checklist of players. Similarly a "post-career" master set could be created under the same standards.
Also, a player who had a lengthy career as a manager could have a "double career master set" - the most obvious examples here are Joe Torre and Frank Robinson, but everyone from Ted Williams to Jim Fregosi could potentially be covered by this sort of set.
