1960's Topps Issues: PSA 9s as a % of total submissions - as of 12/8/03

I just ran thru the updated POP reports for the Topps Baseball 1960's mainstream sets....and calulated the percentage of submissions that came back as a PSA 9.

1960 - 1402/53237 = 2.63%
1961 - 3301/70919 = 4.65%
1962 - 1433/42625 = 3.36%
1963 - 1888/50705 = 3.72%
1964 - 2576/38150 = 6.75%
1965 - 3152/44784 = 7.03%
1966 - 1934/30435 = 6.35%
1967 - 3836/43102 = 8.90%
1968 - 12853/63811 = 20.14%
1969 - 7572/47779 = 15.85%

I was surprised to find that the 1960 % was so low.

    BASILONE - Interesting data!

I;m surprised that 1968 is so high. I've always been aware that there's a ton of high grade PSA cards out there, but 1 out of every 5 cards is a PSA-9 is very high. If you add the PSA-10's w/ the PSA-9's thats almost 1 out of every 4 is a 9 or higher. So much for the rough condition sensative set...jay
  • John- As a sometimes 66' collector have a gut feeling that if the total numbers were higher, the % of 9's in the 66' set would trend lower. Because of the narrow borders, centering and diamond cut problems as well as toning on the reverse makes any 66' a bear to squeeze out the daunted 9 grade.
    Just my 2 cent.

Great info John! The 1960 Topps set is notoriously off center....just opened 2 packs and every one was OC!!!

Im also suprised that the # of submissions are so close between 1962, 1965, & 1967. I would of thought the 1962 numbers would of been closer to the 1966 numbers.
  • Great data, John.

I have some data on the 1961 set from May 2001. PSA 9 then was 1334/27543 4.84%.

Interesting how the percentage has stayed pretty steady over time. OF course, back then, almost all of the submissions were Star cards.

I was surprised at the low percent for the 63 set, also.

Frank, I am not sure if the OC really explains the 1960 set. I agree that the cards are terribly OC, but then, the OC cards are rarely submitted, so wouldn't be counted iin total submisions.

    edited to correct year

Interesting that the 1969 % was so high. I'm willing to bet that the '69 set (perhaps along with the '68 set) has the highest concentration of 9s over a few cards. I'm not sure how to determine this though. There are many 1969s that have zero or one 9. There are also probably 50-100 cards that have dozens of 9s each.
