what caused this?

I was looking at some of my sms sets and noticed this dime. The in and the we of igwt is almost completely flattened. The top of liberty and united states of america has it also though not as severe. Is this just a weak strike? If so why is only the edge of the coin affected?

    grease-filled die error.

Does the grease get pushed to the edge and get trapped when the die is struck?

usually the grease doesnt get left around the rim as the dies are wiped clean, or in this case, half dast cleaned.

its sorta a `operator failure` error more than a mechanical error.
had the operator really cleaned the dies down into the nooks and crannies of the devices this `error`
    wouldnt happen.
The Philly mint is notorious for low quality control hence all the error coins that come from there.

    take that back.

it (dirt or grease) DOES usually get left around the edge.
