Anyone want to guess what this will end up going for? Just curious.

  • I saw this post, and checked out the auction. Because I don't collect this set, I had no clue what they trade at so I hit the SMR to see what is said. I was stunned. $14,522 is what it said for a straight 7 set. Add $980 (28 commons * $35 7/8 differential) for the PSA 8 commons and you get $15,502. Is the SMR really that out of touch on this set?

Oh, and while looking at the SMR for this set, I saw this line...

    126 Ben Wade
    PSA 5=$15 PSA 6=$20 PSA 7=$75 PSA 8=$2000 PSA 9=$3500

WOW! If I had this card in a 7 and felt it was anywhere near NM/MT quality, I'd send it for a regrade with every order I sent to PSA...

  • There was a 56 set tonight that was a better bargain IMO. 100 PSA 8s, including a Mantle, for 12K. The Mantle is a 2K card alone.
  • JR - Although the Wade card is tough one in high grade; I think PSA meant $200 in PSA 8 for that one. Only 13 PSA 8's. Fewer than 10 in this set have a PSA 8 count below 20!

    RayBShotz,

No--they do mean $2,000--PSA has made an exception here to their normal practice of not separating out low pop commons. Andy Madec just sold one on ebay but I am unaware what he received for it.

The Wade, Woodling, and Mills cards regularly bring $1500 - $2500 a pop in 8. Lately, I have seen Wades sell more in the $1500 range. It is a centering based scarcity that is also a Dodger card.

  • Although the 1954 set is pretty nice looking I just can't see paying a great deal for this set. The lack of star cards is a real turn-off as compared to some of the other sets from the 1950's.

I mean what's a set from that era without a Mantle? This coming from a guy who loves '34 Goudey....the set without Ruth!!!

  • I know of a 1954 Wade in straight PSA 8 went for $2600 on EBAY during this past spring or summer. Spirited bidding the entire auction. It went to $1850 within a day of listing.

  • Jim - All as I can say is WOW! I have begun to dabble in this set a bit and have studied the tough cards for a few weeks but that sure looked like a typo. How come the SMR doesnt do the same for the Mills. It appears to be the toughest. I recenty was lucky to snag a PSA 7 Mills and have seen similar tough 7's like the Wade and Woodling go for big numbers ( much bigger than I paid for the Mills) as you said.
Prices in general on ebay, are very firm (compared to SMR) on this set starting right from PSA 6 grade on up.

I love this set...just looks so VINTAGE!

Here's a nice 7. The best 7 I've found in years...I paid $400+ for this card. Who would be willing to crack it and resubmit? NOT ME!

    RayBShotz,

I wish that PSA did list more low pop commons. Joe doesn't keep up with the ebay auctions and he would have to rely on someone making the case to him that a low pop card should be separately broken out.

It is a great set. Although my friend Tom is normally quite sensible(after all he hates the Kellogg's cards), HE IS WRONG ON THIS ONE--LACK OF STAR CARDS??????? Aaron rc, Mays, 2 Ted Williams, Banks rc, Kaline rc, Jackie Robinson--its loaded with superstars. Great set and I ask other collectors to help me with the 12 psa 8s I need to complete the set in psa 8 or better.

Davalillo - it has fewer HOFers than the '54 Bowman set, even though it picks up a couple from the coaches (Manush and Combs) and has more cards).
I will definitely agree that this set is very firm as against SMR in PSA 7 or above, but I do see deals coming around in PSA 6 (and in PSA 8 OC). I've been very pleased to pick up some bargains in other holders recently (SCD, GAI, and SGC).
