Need opinions on this 1853 quarter...

I offered $150, but the seller wants $175. Would you pay that much?

I would not purchase an 1853A&R from anyone who claimed it was "rare".

It does looked too clean from the photo. There should be some sort of tone on a coin that old.

Yes, I agree just imagine how bright the coin is in real life- the 2x2 the coins in is supposed to be white! mike

Certainly has the look of an altered coin -- over dipped??image

Remember, this is the MOST COMMON dated seated quarter from 1838 to 1891 bar none. If it weren't a one year type coin it would bring one half to one third as much. Does look cleaned however.
A nice light grayish original one would be a treat. And those are common enough to find a nice one at any decent sized show. They aren't exactly easy to sell either imo. Bargain hard.

I think the seller should have jumped at $150. I would not go above $75 without an in hand examination.

It's been cleaned, so no. I think 150 is too much. I would prefer an original uncleaned piece. Airplanenut has a nice original one in his charity auction that looks a lot nicer than that one.

Cleaned and I bet if you saw in person, much worst than picture.
