Can a VG cent be "RED"?

dbldie55dbldie55 Posts: 7,735 ✭✭✭✭✭
I think this was discussed, but I cannot find the thread. It seems this forums favorite troll is selling his Lincolns and his 1922 "plain" is graded VG 10 RED. He makes sure to boast that with this coin you can keep the complete "red" set using this coin. This sounds like a mechanical error to me and knowing the seller, I would not put it past him to hype the holder instead of correct the holder.

So, can a Lincoln Cent be very good and still qualify as full red?

I don't think it is possible to have that much natural wear and not be brown.
  • If it has the coin #3287 then according to PCGS it DOES have the "RD" designation and WILL show up as "RD" in the cert verification AND in the POP report AND in the registry set - period. Of course it may be a mechanical error but PCGS HAS designated several NON MS 22 No D's as RD in the pop reports. Take it up with them.

I guess that is the answer straight from the horses mouth. Certainly a set to be proud of. I am sure PCGS would be glad to display it.

After all, what's more important: a coin you can be proud of or a cert # you can manipulate with?

Yah, I think most of the cent collectors on this board are aware of the coin and the seller. Personally, I prefer brown coins.

Tradedollarnut: I can't believe you set yourself up so badly with that quote of yours!

Here is another wonderful date IHC I just acquired but have not yet received (from Jay Parrino on ebay). Jay must have trouble with photocopying dark copper?

At least I can argue that the coin is not red even though it is better than VG?
