Coins and smoking

There is a pawn shop in my town that I recently went to for the first time a couple weeks ago. The store is VERY heavily smoked in, all three workers I think smoke. Unfortunately the smoke is so heavy I cannot shop there, was able to look around for about 3 minutes before I left. I am a non smoker but a very strong advocate for personal freedom and people having the right to do anything they want (so as it's legal) and I am not complaining about the fact that they smoke, their store they can do as they please, but rather I want to ask if smoke can damage coins.

What will long term smoke do to coins in flipits and 2x2s. What about the coins that are in slabs? Will smoke damage the slabs or seep in? My mom used to smoke and after over 30 years of it she quit and when we painted the house, places on the wall with pictures were white behind them while the rest of the walls were yellowish.

Kinda to bad I can't handle the smoke, I did see a couple nice coins I wanted, including a walking liberty. image Guess my allergies are just to sensitive.

Anyway, I was just curious if smoke can damage the coins by putting some kind of coating or otherwise on them.

Smoke will leave a disgusting yellow or brown film over just about
everything in the vicinity. Over the very long term it would seem
probable that this film will react to the surfaces of coins, but I've
seen collections exposed to them for many decades which were un-
affected except that they smelled bad and had the film.

I've seen very few coins which were obviously damaged by smoking.

I would say that a quick wash with acetone would remove that smoke film from silver coins. Something like hexane, petroleum ether, ligroine (if you can get it) mite work better for coppers.

The worst thing about coins and smoking is that if you smoke you wont be alive to enjoy them. I wish I didn't smoke----BigE

I doubt that any damage would occor if the coins were in flips or something. However, smoke can be used to impart artificial toning on coins.

I haven't been able to completely quit smoking, though I have cut back considerably and only do it outside, now. Wouldn't wanna smoke inside the house, for our little girl and my nonsmoking wife's sake, if not the coins'!

When I was a bachelor who lived alone, I smoked inside the house, and when I got married and moved in with my wife, I cleaned all the picture frames. The stuff that came off the glass when I cleaned 'em made me really want to clean up my act!

I live in a smoke free home, and it takes my breath away when i go into heavily smoked-in places.
