Nova Scotia 1856 penny & half

I won these on eBay the other day.. they weren't really my priority, but I got sniped on everything else so bought these 'cause I was annoyed image

My question, since these are out of my usual area: what are these actually worth? and what would you grade them? Are there many people into them? (this was actually the first time I've seen 'em) I'm sure I overpaid, but oh well.. I didn't want to go away empty handed image

1 penny - paid $15.60

1/2 penny - paid $12.60

I also managed to pick up a J Brooke Sarawak cent that I've wanted for a while last night image

I personally would put both at choice VF, with your penny about Extremely Fine. I'll let somebody with a more recent Krause handy answer the value question, as I'm at work with only my 10-year-old hardcovers.

(Speaking of Krause, you should be able to look those up in your own '93 edition, any day now...)

I have always loved that design, and would like to get a red UNC example. I have a nice EF-AU-ish (but holed) penny like that on my Holey Coin Vest.

Yeah, it is a nice design.. I was thinking about switching directions into large coppers, since German stuff is getting boring again..

I'm looking forward to it. Thanks again image

  • My 2004 Charleton has the NS 1856 halfpenny valued at C $15 for VF and the penny at C $10 for VF and C $25 for fine. C $15 right now is approximately
US $11.49, and C $10 is approx. $7.66. I agree with LM's grades, and I don't think you overpaid for them because they are very nice examples.

In my experience, there is not a lot of demand for the Provincial coins in the US; mainly sought after by Canadians, except for some Canadianophiles like me image

Thanks LuvD! Well, I'm not disappointed with the price, I like the coins image Anyway, I think I made up for it with that Sarawak cent and some others I just got on the cheap image

I think I'll go for a New Brunswick penny next, or PEI.. those are nice too.

Which year is Charlton's 5th ed? just out of curiosity.. I'm trying to get all these catalogs straight image
  • The 5th edition of Charlton Canadian Colonial Tokens was published in March, 2003.
The 58th Edition of Charlton standard catalogue of Canadian Coins came out in late 2003, but has the 2004 date for publication.

Just fyi, the Canadian Coins one has the provincial coins listed too.
