THE 1938-1964 JEFFERSON NICKEL SERIES: A LOOK BACK AT 2003

As 2003 comes to a close, I was thinking about all the great 1938-1964 Jefferson Nickels PCGS slabbed in 2003. There was so much talk at the beginning of the year of the proliferation of high grade coins to be slabbed at PCGS this year - not to mention the "warnings" to collectors about "chasing" the low pop specimens.
The amazing thing is all I could come up with were (3) super (Gem or better grade) coins slabbed THIS ENTIRE YEAR!! As amazing as it sounds, I do not recall PCGS slabbing any other incredible high grade Jeffs other than the three coins I am about to mention!! I just spoke with Dave Schweitz about this issue and he also could not recall any other important Gem or better grade MS Jeffs from 1938-1964 that were slabbed ALL YEAR!!
Collectors - please include any additional coins here on the thread that were not mentioned. But, even if an entire "handful" of great coins were slabbed in 2003, isn't that amazing that so few key date MS Jeffs were actually slabbed in 2003 considering the RECORD submissions to PCGS! Have all the great coins dried up? Are dealers simply too busy to submit these five cent coins that would be worth multi-thousands if they grade high? Were the "warnings" to avoid the low pop key date coins misplaced?
THE (3) LANDMARK COINS PCGS SLABBED IN 2003 IN THE 1938-1964 JEFFERSON SERIES.
1. 1943(p): PCGS-MS68FS: Submitted by Dave Schweitz earlier this year (MS68 from our boards) - this War Nickel with the lowest underpop is IMHO possibly the neatest MS68FS Jeff thus far graded as it is an immensely rare coin in this grade.
2. 1943(d): PCGS-MS68FS. Submitted by myself earlier this year. - this War nickel is the prettiest high grade War nickel to ever get into a PCGS holder IMHO. A true masterpiece.
3. 1954(p): PCGS-MS66FS. Submitted by Dave Schweitz earlier this year. This became the pop 2 coin of a very tough "p" mint Jeff from the 1950's.
NOT A SINGLE MS67FS COIN OF GREAT INTEREST WAS GRADED FOR THE ENTIRE YEAR THAT I RECALL.
No question, this is also a very interesting series of coins.

In the future it will be the lower grade coins getting sent in as their values get up to the
point that it becomes worthwhile to grade them.
If the owner is unhappy with it, I would be happy to take it off his/her hands!

I hate self serving paper thin threads like this. Of the RECORD number of submissions, how many were 38-64 Jeffersons? How many were submitted last year? If you are going to start running numbers, at least provide some. When did the ONLY FS 1960 and 1961 get slabbed (it could have been last year, but not before). I hate cladking like fantasy statistics.

Here's the only good in depth kind of threadDEEP COIN
All other threads must be derailed.
It was fall 2002 that the first 1961 D in FS was slabed
There are still no 67,68-D's ,69-D, or 69-S with FS

are they gorgeous toners like silver or like the buffalo nickels?"
Craig: Prices vary depending upon myriad factors, but, it is possible to locate pop 2-3 coins for around $6k, or so (less likely for key date coins of course). The war nickels can tone beautifully. The non-war nickels are exceedingly scarce in pretty toned high grade. I believe the "key date" 1939(d) in PCGS -MS67FS (pop 3 with 1940 reverse) will appear in the the Heritage FUN sale, along with at least one other pop 2-3 coin from the early Jeff set.

Of course, this thread is about 38-64's, not 65-date coins.
I would think '04 will be the year for the Jefferson's as the reverse is going away (hopefully forever). It will be interesting to look back again a year from now.
<< <i>Dbldie: Thanks for coming around once a month to share your "valuable" opinion. I was wondering what took you so long this time.

I had just got home.
Proof Jeffs can tone blue like Buffalo nickels. I don't see as many gold toned ones as I do Buffs but they are there.
Here is an image of a toned Mint State Jefferson from the Applachian hoard:
what about my 1940/R.38 that's in for grading now? it should be posted as a PR67 which would be a pop 7 coin. all bias aside, i really can't imagine any of the other coins looking like this one even if it's only holdered as a PR66. i'll link it up when they post the grades, most likely early next week. the picture doesn't do it justice due to my continued inability to capture color as it appears. it's mark free, haze free and a nice strike with the only weakness at the sixth step below the third pillar. the actual color in the obverse fields and above the dome is blue, which gives it a cameo appearance sans the frost.
