Registry set completed

Completed my IHC registry set this week (NGC). Actually the 1873 Closed 3 is blank because a Snow-1 DDO is in an ICG slab and I don't really feel like cracking it out, also have an 1873 Closed 3 Snow 2 (raw). The only coins to upgrade are an 1864 BZ MS61 to a MS66 BN and an 1868 AU to MS65 RB (dealers have the coins on hold for me and I'll pick them up in Baltimore Friday).
There are a couple of AUs still in the set, but they have super eye appeal and I'm not going to upgrade, at least not in the near future.
The set was put together based primarily on eye appeal, not color designation or MS#.
Thanks to the following GREAT dealers:
Andy Skrabalak - Angel Dees
Mark Feld - Pinnacle
Rick Snow - Eagle Eye
Gail Watson - JJ Teaparty
and David Lawrence Rare Coins
for helping me locate some very nice specimens, and for being fine folks to work with.

Are you planning on looking into a new series? You mention you are not planning on upgrades. I always wonder what people do when they finish a set. I kept my Proof Jeffs and moved on to a type set.
As to what comes next, I'm not sure. I collect varieties and there are enough IHC varieties out there to last a long time. Have also toyed with the idea of an IHC proof set or possibly a two cent set.
Time to sit back and relax and enjoy the coins for a while. If the "copper set" bug bites again, who knows. The registry set is what remains of two separate IHC sets, one in F/VF and the other in XF/AU - both of which were sold off or traded up to achieve the present set. I just don't feel like participating in another big "hunt" right now.
I'm fortunate to have a very nice variety set of Flyers including two complete sets of 1857 multiple denomination clashed dies. The only thing I'm lacking is a 56 Flyer (like so many other collectors ; missed a great opportunity to get a real nice one last year ). About half of the Flyers are in ANACS slabs or raw and cracking them out for the registry doesn't seem so important.
Best to all of you - still a lot to learn. Many of you have provided great information and excellent advice over the last couple of years.

Great work Pushkin. From another IHC collector I know all the work it takes to find those coins in an acceptable and somewhat affordable condition. Have a long way to go to catch you.
Good luck finding a choice MS 1856 FE, most are really proofs, mislabeled.
You worked with top flight dealers who have also helped me locate a majority of my IHC's.
You have achieved quite an accomplishment, and rightly be very proud.

MFH,
The patterns are really nice. But, as you know, the prices have risen dramatically. I looked at a number of them and may try to add a few in the future, but if it happens, it will be one every year or so. Sounds like you have some very pretty ones.
Very nice.
But we need to see PICTURES in your set!
It's no fair if you're the only one who gets to look at them

Once you start getting interested in transitional patterns, its hard to stop. Yes, these have gone up in the last few years, but I still think their prices are rising faster than other areas. My next target is J-191, as I don't have any pattern flyers.
Upgrading my set of AU 55- 58's to MS coins would be far more expensive than to occasionally add a transitional pattern IHC. You're right though, adding one coin a year is also about all I can muster, too.
Good luck imaging your set, I know we'd all like to see it.
Again, congratulations !

MFH,
The ones I really like are the Small Eagle transitional patterns. I know Lakesammmon has a number of these, perhaps you do also. I'd be happy to own just one, but I've never been able to find a low end MS that was available in my price range.
Last month I picked up QD Bowers' new Judd Pattern book, and have poured over it. The pricing seems very current, so you know what to expect when you do run accross a nice pattern. I bought the Pollock book a couple of years ago, and it has the comprehensiveness that you would expect from some one who completely reorganized the original Judd book; however, it proved too awkward to use, {cross referencing between the P&J numbers} . Aside from that, it is worth getting your hands on this book; also pick up the new Judd book while you're at it.
Regarding what you said in your first (or second) post, I agree with you, most of my IHC and FE's are raw. The key dates are certified, but I did that for peace of mind. Although I have most of my collection in raw state, I think that I'll break down and have the whole group slabbed, so as to display them in Eagle brand certified page/ holders. It irks me having a collection lack continuity, but having to spend the money to certify 40 or so coins, equally irks me. I have a few double dies, RPD's, and MPD's that may not be recognized by either of the major grading services. My 1873 CL3 - S2 DDO is raw and every bit as nice as my PCGS S1 DDO in AU55, yet I don't think they have recognized the S2 in any POP reports ( except for the Fly-In Club , which seems to keep acurate records of die varieties).
Sorry ...I tend to ramble... I look forward to viewing your set on line when you have a chance to scan it. I assume your set is on the PCGS site, under which name...??? You can't miss my set, its the one with a 2% completion rating.
Good hunting !
