Mine has always been open, and I intend to eventually get pics posted as well.

I will personally only open a set where I have no intention of "stepping up" and paying "big money" for the coins I still need. Hence, my MS Kennedy collection and MS Roosie collection have always been open. On the other hand, I would only entertain the possibility of opening up my Wash quarter set if PCGS offered to make it a Hall of Fame Collection next June (my understanding is the Hall of Fame collections must be opened up to accept the award) and I wanted the award.

Everyone has a different take on it and I understand why someone else would love to show off the particular coins in their collection. But, to me, the "roadmap" to hold me hostage for a particular coin ends with knowing I am serious about a particular series, not with the seller knowing I desparately need the coin he just made. image

Point well taken. Those that hold others hostage like this should be flogged. image

    Foodude,

In the past couple of days I've added a lot of images to my Type Sets. I'm using a scanner now, with hopes of getting a digital camera soon. I'm sooo lazy. image Then I'll start all over again.

DAM: I just received a call from a top #1 open set collector in a series who deeply regrets ever opening up his/her collection in the first place. It's a trade off - if you desire all the benefits of an open set (including collectors going nuts for all the great coins in your set and the personal enjoyment of seeing all the "pop tops" lined up so nicely), then you accept the burdens as well. But, if you are a disciplined collector, perhaps your reply is you would never be "held hostage" because you would only pay so much for a coin regardless of whether anyone knew you needed it or not. I feel that way as it pertains to Roosies and Kennedys and so I truly enjoy my open sets. image

Seems to me letting someone know who owns the set is the only stupid thing for those that do not want to be held "hostage". The person with that pop 1 coin can contact the owners of the top sets without seeing their sets. They can accept or decline. Having the set open makes no difference. The only way to avoid it is to not let anyone know who owns it.

At least we are only worrying about a boring series here.

Dbldie: Obviously, the person with a pop 1 coin KNOWS every set needs it. I have personally found the issue arises on the pop 2-5 coins in particular.

    Open OnRutton

Quite probably open for a limited time only.

    RELLA

(BTW...this is not my set, I just linked to it)
Do not fall into the error of the artisan

    twenty times.
  • Excuse me Mr. RELLA (is that Italian?),

That must be an old link since it shows that set to be the #1 All-Time set but it is really the #2 All-Time set. image

How strange...the link is to a new page since this is the first time that I have noticed this set open for viewing. Must just be a glitch in the software. image

  • I'd love to look at the top sets just to be able to admire the
sets and be green with envy. I even raised the point at the
Baltimore ANA with David Hall. I guess that we just have to
(reluctantly) respect the privacy of the set owners.

Perhaps, but what's the point of taking up space if it's going to be 5 years before your set is complete (to your satisfaction). There are collectors receiving recognition for having a Finest Known Set. If it's the finest, let us know what's in the set. Especially Type Sets.

    Is this better?

    << <i>Open OnRutton

Perhaps we should make it number 10 instead:
