My new cup cake [cc]

Found by accident held in a private collection for over 20 years. Not the 'finest' certified but the 'prettiest' 1870-CC half eagle I've ever seen. Post your favorite CC.1870CC Half Eagle.jpg
Sorry thought I knew how to post the picture will get some help and another tutorial.image

And what a cup cake it is. Dahlonega was enough nice to show me his 1870-CC, that coin had as Dahlonega would say "alot of meat on the bone"image

    D.

Beautiful coin and nice discovery. With all this SS Republic business going on, it makes me think more about buying some coins that were definitely not on that boat. CC gold coins qualify.

    Nice pickup and congrats!

    D,

    AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME.

Cool color, nice strike.....looks closer to UNC than anything else. Do YOU see wear? Did the collector tell you where he got the coin? Any idea what this coin was worth in the mid-80's? Explain the "accident" part, too.

    Thanks for sharing.

  • Thanks Seth,
Coin was purchased over 20+ years ago for $3400 raw later placed in an early PCGS holder [AU-50].
Strike is excellent, color wonderful and I could discern no luster breaks over the brow or on the eagles neck. Really hard to tell if it's a PQ 55/58 or mint state. More important to me is that the color is beautiful and original plus has the original 'skin'. Couldn't find any problems under halogen lights and magnification then I applied my super secret check to the coin...it even looks nice outside in sunlight. Al Adams bought the rest of the offering and will be presenting these fresh at FUN. My timing happened to be good and since I often cover Al's table for him at show's was allowed first shot one coin only. Fortunately I've always wanted an 1870-CC because there were other CC coins in close competition. Unfortunately I did not get the coin for $3400 no matter I was frothing at the mouth and acting rabid simply paid what I was told without ever handing the coin back.
Can't give the other details of the purchases since the gentlemen is considering selling some of his other gold holdings but, obviously he and/or his dealer had a great eye for originality. image
