Just a Roosie. Another Picture Added. New Opinions ?

Yesterdays hunt for Mercs turned into a hunt for anything with a nice look. This coin has the look in my opinion. Decent strike, I think, and some really pretty color. Three more of these were purchased but this is the best one overall.

It appears that the bands on this coin are split but I still do not understand how deep the splint is suppose to be for the designation. I sure these do not show a split like a FB Merc would. Another strike point that seems to be common is the verticle splits. For the coins I find this seems to be weak also. Usually it is there but weak, again not like a Merc would show.

    Ken,

I picked up a bunch of coins that have that same look about three weeks ago at a coin show.

    Cool!

LOOKING FOR 1931-s merc that is nice for the grade and fb
  • Bottom band is a little weak on this one, but it dose look high grade.

Weakness on the right side is the most common for silver, with the last vertical band sometime s missing .
Always give the coin a tilt to see that the horiz band is split all the way to the end.

Nice looking coin but does not appear to be FB. The reverse strike actually looks much more like a 58P which is characteristically weak. Good solid FB coins do look like Merc's on the lower bands - but they are a bit tougher to find - how much more so depends upon the date (just like Merc's). Its funny, when the FB designation first started, I really expected the 58D to be one of the higher pop FB coins but it really hasn't. By far, the 50D seems to the most common FB coin with pop 63 in MS67FB, followed by the 46S and 59D in the mid 40's pop's. The 58D is I recall, a pop 29/2 in MS67FB.

Here is the last Roosie purchased Saturday. This looks FB all the way and shows a deep split. Nice Original finger print on the obverse. Cannot blame PCGS for this. image

  • I would say the 58-d will go 67, probably fb .

    the 55 looks 66fb

Amazing the difference a "new" picture can make - now the 58D looks pretty good band-wise!

It was tough, standing on my head, too get that picture taken at my age. The picture took a little doing but after a few tries it was accomplished...image

After looking at the other dime shown I think the 58D is a little shallow for the FB designation.

  • It is difficult to say for sure from the pix whether the 58-d is fb... but I think it's worth a shot.

Like mercs, many dates have a different look, and a fb 58-d wont look like a fb 55-d.

As many have observed... the key is right where the right side of the crossbands meets the field, the depth of the valley is of no concern as long as it is uninterruptured. imageimage
