Damaged Morgans....what to do.

Most of the Morgans that I was given were apparently at some point taped to something and the tape has left a nasty residue on the coins that makes them look like crap. I'm wondering if cleaning with solvent of some kind would be the wrong thing to do. As they are now they are pretty damned ugly with a plasticky like film/gum on them where the tape was at some point. I have put an example in my ever-growing online coin album. I've also recently taken some much better pictures since playing around with the camera settings some more and different light arangements. The recent ones are VERY large to show detail so don't bother with dial-up unless you want to wait a while. There is also a couple of pics of the one undamaged(non-taped) 1881(S) Morgan to see along with a couple of peace dollars, some quarters, merc dimes and a couple of pennys. Any suggestions for better pics are much appreciated......I'm still learning. I'm going to re-shoot some of the gold coins soon with my newer methods and see what comes of it. Thanks for all the help!
Enjoy!

    Try acetone
What is money, in reality, but dirty pieces of paper and metal upon which privilege is stamped?

The reverse on the 88 has been whizzed and not very nicely done either.

Acetone isn't going to help you there. Damaged is a good word for the coin. Sorry.image

Yep soaking in acetone will do the trick. Too bad it has been harshly cleaned or it would be slabbable. Toning from tape lines won't preclude slabbing.

Meta, one thing you might consider is to send the damaged coins to Numismatic Conservation Services (NCS). They may be able to help, but the cost may or may not be worth it. Just a thought.

It is the same thing, but any additives like fragrances are BAD! A hardware store will have jugs of it.

Acetone will remove the residue from the tape but the corrosion
the tape caused to the coins is beyond acetone's abilities.

Dollardude's suggestion about NCS is probably your best bet
    for the damage.
    Good luck.
