Does anyone collect errors?

I'd like to include those of us that master in errors or people like me who pick up errors if they are cool ones. I have a clipped '47 Jefferson, a handfull of offcentered Lincolns, and a few double struck Lincolns. Do you think it's a good idea to slab errors?

    TooTawl-

Errors are the mainstream in my collection. I have approximately 200 slabbed errors, mostly slabbed by ANACS because of their very cheap slabbing rate ($7.00 per coin). My collection includes off metals, double strikes, die caps, scraps, hammered zincers a.k.a. mutilated Lincoln cents, off centes, and mated pairs.

I have a few errors that are slabbed that are not worth more than $10.00. I don't slab to sell. I slab to have a nice presentation of coins.

    Cheers, Richard.

I try not to collect errors, but I've made a few in my lifetime.

I'd put my first marriage in that category.

Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

The last coin show I went to had one table that must have at had 30 PCGS error slabs. Rampage, if you are going to the FUN show, I'd like to sit down and talk errors with ya. I was thinking of getting some of my errors just for the reason that you mentioned: Display.

I'm not much of the error collector, but I do have two. A 3 legged buffalo(AU55 in a PCGS), 1937d that my dad left me and a 1942/1 Merc dime in a VF (raw) that I bought because I got a wild hair up my (censored). I don't know why I bought it, it just seemed to call out to me.

I'll probably keep both, even though they don't fit with anything else in my collection.

Perhaps I'll try for a 1942/1d merc, 1922 cent and 1955/55 cent too. One day.

I will be at FUN, but not sure which day yet.

What are you all planning and I will try to work around that.

I can bring in some errors to show and tell if you like?

    Richard.

In '73 I won 1st place at NECA's (now defunct) show with my collection of major '73 Lincoln errors. An 11 cent piece(cent struck over a struck dime) was the highlight. After disbanding my coins years later, I still have a hard time finding '73 Lincoln cent errors on the market. I also had at the time the only known '73-S flip-over double strike cent. Anyone out there seen any of the '73's?

Lord - LOL, I can relate to your errors made history.

I've caught the error bug this past year. I love looking at some of the wonderful screwups that have slipped out of the Mint. Some are fascinating to study and truly one-of-a-kind coins to own.

I'm still waiting for word on what's going to happen next week in Baltimore. There will probably be more posts as show time gets closer.

I have well over 100 errors, all dated 1997 of course, from cuds & die cracks on pennies to struck thrus on bullion issues & everything in between.
Never see anything real "major" from 97 like mated pairs, just the common stuff.
I have them in SEGS, ANACS, NGC, & PCGS holders cause that's how they were when I bought them but I have sent a few to ANACS to get holdered because they display better in slabs than 2x2s.
Here's the remanants of a die cap.

I don't specifically collect errors, but I buy interesting ones that seem to fit into the collection. Examples... 1946 WLH DDR, 1901 M Shifted Eagle, 1888-0 Hotlips and rotated dies are interesting... what's a collection without some mistakes...image

I have just started collecting errors mostly pennies for now seems I find the most errors in those.image
  • I still like Jeremys' coin. Struck through a half capped die! (The obverse die was capped but the cap was an off-center cent. Three errors had to occur to create that coin.)
  • So many coins and so little money! The internet has really opened up everyone’s choices. Many years ago you had to go to many shows to build an error collection, now you can choose from hundreds each week on the net. I like to add errors to my completed modern sets, I think they make a nice addition. Hear is one of my favorites, a little gruesome, but a neat Kennedy error. Noticed the Bullet line, die error, to the head and the crushed skull.

I collect RPM's and any other error I can find. I have a few double dies, a few d/s and s/d mint marks, repunched date coins, mostly Indian head cents and a few misplaced dates. I found a 1997 double ear Lincoln cent in change a couple years age. I also found a 1942/1 Mercury dime in a roll of Merc dimes. Still looking for a 1917 and 1936 DDO Lincoln.

Definitely an error guy here. I spent the better part of five hours Friday at a show trying to cherrypick clipped Lincolns (and actually found a couple). It remains an open debate which is more defective, me or the coins I collect. image

gonzer: I just won a clipped 1973-S Lincoln Cent from Len Roosmalen, it's taken me seven years to find one. I've only seen a handful of S-mint striking errors from 1973, a couple of double-struck (one double-dated) and a handful of off-centers, but man are they hard to find. I'd love to know if you had any other '73-S clips back then.

One technicality: coins like the '55 doubled die, RPM's, RPD's, etc. are technically 'varieties' not errors. Some folks use the two terms interchangably, while others are real sticklers for the distinction.

I've always thought errors were neat, but never really had any good stuff. Since I started with eBay, I've gotten a whole bunch of cool (IMO) error coins, mostly cents because they tend to be the cheapestimage

I'm putting together an off-center type set. Still need a half and a dollar - maybe I'll find them in Balto later in the week.
