I'm curious why a POP ONE Buffalo in the same grade as a POP TWO Buffalo is $11,000.00 less expensive? I don't know this series in the upper Superb grades, so I apologize if this is an extra dumb question.

    Braddick:

Wake up!! The first is NGC graded, the second is PCGS graded! BTW, I have no idea whether either of these coins are worth anywhere near the asking prices.

A PCGS MS67 1916 Buff went for $15,000 last fall.

The 1936-D is a far more difficult coin than a more common 16-P.

    Does that help? image

BTW, these coins are for specialists only, really. You had BETTER know how to grade and know the series to buy them.

I missed the NGC/PCGS the first go around. My error.
    Regardless- very, very impressive!
There is nothing like an original skinned, blazing MS68 Buffalo. Nice!

In an overall sense neither is particularly rare. The 38-D is VERY common. If you are talking grade rarity most > MS67 Buffs are rare....

Stewart: play nice! We are entering a new paradigm in the rare coin market - one where the absence of microscopic flaws can turn a coin from mere pocket change to objects of supreme desire worth tens of thousands of dollars. Needs are being met..... image

    That 36-D is spectacular.

caitlin: What are the imperfections or weakness, if any that can be seen under higher levels of magnification?

I seem to think there is a very minor bagmark in the front leg of the buffalo. Is that in the plastic?

    A lovely coin indeed!

    Thanks,

    Hi Oreville
This is an awesom coin with no dings or any marks and no dought an MS-68 COIN. The mark is on the plastic and is magnified by the photo.

Well, I'm not sure who's pulling who's leg (I suppose it's mine! image ) but 38-D's are essentially common. So I guess, as a TYPE COIN, Buffs are not rare in MS67. But many Buffs in MS67 go for a hellava lot of money. Rare? I dunno...a 19-S would be. image Personally, I like picking up dates/grades just before the "big jump" in price so I don't pay too much attention to Registry numbers and that crap.

Congratulations, Caitlin. That's a lovely coin. Made me want to start collecting buffalo nickels again. But then I looked at my wallet and decided: "Nope. If the 36-D -- a common date -- costs such an incredible amount of bread, my wallet's WAYYYYYY too thin."

    Good luck!

    JHF,

A boring old MS67 1936-D will only set you back $1,500 or so. image
