Large date, couldn't find a nice pic of small date.

Edited: Sorry folks, went scouring the web for pics and didn't realize what I had found so I erased it. Not many good pictures out there.

mgoodm - That's not a very good example to use because it's a small date over large date doubled die. Since it has the characteristics of both, it would only confuse a beginner.

  • The "6" in the small date will make more of a tear drop shape. Ihe upper stroke is shorter. On the large date the upper stroke will extend further, making the "6" less tear drop shaped. Tough to describe verbally though!

Our own coppercoins used to have photos of each on his site but they aren't coming up for me.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

For me the easiest way to tell the difference between the small and large 1960 dates is to look at the 9.

In the small date the top of the 9 is even with the top of the 1. But in the large date the top of the 9 is higher than the 1.

    Hope this helps.

    Joe.

its all in the size of the 6

Buy a certified example of each and train yourself. You can get a 66 red example of each one for less than $25 each already certified

Okay, the photos...the first one is the large date, the second the small date..

The most telling sign of the difference, other than the obvious difference in the shape of the digits, is that on the large date the top of the 9 is higher than the 1, and on the small date they are the same height.

For anyone who is still unsure or just wants a reference set to be able to tell the difference from an experienced source, PM your address and I will send a set - no charge....of course this will include just a 1960D small/large date two coin set - the P mint coins are tougher, at less supply for me, and not give away material at over $100 a roll for the small date.

D mint large and small date cents comprise of over 1,500 rolls of my hoard at about a 3:2 ratio large to small. There is no difference in their value, around $1.00 per roll. I have plenty of examples to go around to bunting Lincoln collectors. BTW, for those interested in knowing, I only have around 150 rolls of P mint large date, and three rolls of P mint small date. My glut year is still 1964P. I have nearly 2,000 rolls of just that date and mint.

  • I was intent on finding a small date coin in circulation. I looked at so many 1960 cents that I became unsure of what I was looking at. It wasn't until I actually found a small date that I understood. When I saw it, I knew it instantly. I still couldn't explain it.

The same thing happened with 1979-P near date SBAs.
The strangest things seem suddenly routine.
  • I have about 200 small dates I picked them up with about 45$ worth of cents I got an auction about a year ago. Now all I need is about 200 large dates.
