California state quarter design recommended by the CCAC - a new low?

NN reports the Citizens Coin Advisory Committee reviewed five suggested designs for the California state quarter and chose this one. I have been pretty critical of the state quarter designs for the most part, but this one seems to me to be the blandest so far.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

A blank planchet reverse would actually be better... that way at least the art philosophy types could have a field day by waxing poetic: "Art is metaphoric and symbolic; it speaks differently to each individual and all we have to do is listen."

    Or some such BS.

    I'm with Homerunhall -- it's barf.

I wonder how those from mountainous, northern california, Napa (sp?) Valley or Silicon Valley feel about that design as representative of their state.

I think it's kinda interesting. I like it better than the state outline/montage designs. I do like the second version better.

I really wanted to see the design featuring both the Golden Gate Bridge and the Hollywood sign. That to me was the only way to capture both the northern and southern parts of the state. Evidently, very few people agreed with me.

I don't think it's a new low, so much as a case of missed potential.

But in a strange sort of way, I like it- there's something modernistic and yet Zen about it. (I know it sounds like I'm talkin' out my ass- most people sound that way when they write art reviews, as DennisH pointed out.)

On second look at the bigger picture, I actually DO like the version Xpipedream posted. It's neutral and all-encompassing. I hear Beach Boys music.

Don't shoot, please. image Maybe if I were in CA I would hate it.

That is so ignorant, you should be able to tell which state it is without reading it! How many states could that apply to?

Its terrible, I agree, . I personally like the original concept of the grizzly bear and Eureka (Minerva), both looking on into the sunset, but of course, since the design has artistic merit and is Greco-Roman in artistic concept, it cannot possibly be selected by the souless and politically correct ignoramouses.

I kinda like it!!! Not cluttered with a bunch of junk relating to the State and a bit contemporary. They should tone down the waves a bit like the design posted by Xpipedream.

It's better than most of the other created so far. It's still a boring design, but at least it's not some random collection of crap thrown on top of the state outline.

The waves do look more like sharks than waves to me.

I'm from the Silicon Valley but don't think there should be computers or chips or anything like that. Mountains are nice. (I may be alone but I really like the NH) Geographically much of the state is desert and mountain. Well they have never listened to me before...

Oddly enough...a lot of people I've talked to out here in Cali actually like that wave design image

As bad as it is, it's still better than this one with 20 separate unrelated scenes going on at once. This has to be the all-time worst design for a state quarter:

Well I like it...and a lot! It's the one I was pulling for. It meets all of my criteria - innovative design, one theme, large devices.

The other California designs were horrible. For example, the Golden Gate bridge with a palm tree...the gold miner (looking at the top of his hat). The John Muir design was ok, but it would have been too tiny on a quarter.

I've been very critical of the state designs, but I think my home state did alright with this one. C'mon you guys, take another look!

I like it. If there's a drawback in the state quarter program, it's not being able to put everything about a state onto one reverse design (although some have tried). Maybe after Hawaii (and possibly the territories) there should be 50 State Quarters Part 2, and the second time around include those things about the states that weren't used the first time around. image
