No Pennies in Finland

An article in Coin World this month had an interesting story of the demise of the penny. Finland no longer has one in circulation and very low mintage for these, pictured . These were minted for circulation but never made it , making the 5 cent the smallest denomination in the country.Fortunately for them ,,, they had a Lion on them and I was able to rescue some from the netherworld. Besides the photo in Coin World left somthing to be desiredimage

Finland has a nice penny design!

I wonder if other EU countries will follow suit and drop the penny.

  • Will this mean my 1900 1 Penni might be worth something someday?

Yep. I think Dimitri said Greece wasn't issuing 1s and 2s for circulation either? I don't remember. I like Finland's 1 euro piece though image

Also, OT, y'know AAFES doesn't give pennies in change overseas.

Spoon, since when don't they do that? I think it's been a while. We used to get a lot of SBA dollars, because they couldn't pawn them off in the States.

Well, I think the policy is that they don't ship over rolls of pennies for change, but if they have them they give them. I'm not sure. As I recall it was like that last time I was here too (early 90s). The post office seems to always give pennies though?
  • I wonder if the U.S. or Canada will ever eliminate the cent.
So many coins, so little money!

Certainly looks like an area to start a collection, Short supply , easily damaged, thrown away.....5 years from now could be hidden value.image
  • Finland hadn't used a 1 penni coin since 1979. The markka was worth about 15c U.S. before the Euro making the next step up 5 penni coin worth about 1 cent U.S. So when the Euro came out it was roughly equal to $1 but the Finns were used to calculating prices to the nearest 5 penni and were reluctant to shift back to calculating with smaller denominations again. So the 1 and 2 eurocent coins went largely unused and unwanted.

  • The end coins in these Finland 1 and 2 eurocent denominations yield some really DARK cherry red coppers! I'll see if I can photo two side by side to show the forum.

  • Also wanted to add, if anyone needs these (1 & 2 eurocents) for their euro sets, PM me, we can easily work something out. They aren't rare if I have all dates, maybe scarce...image

    Mongoose:

Maybe you should slab them before this gets around. Link
  • Newsman, no thanks...but I'll send you a roll and we can split the profits? image

    Joe:

Might not be a bad idea. I've been trying to figure out the logic in why PCGS chose to create a Euro registry instead of one for coins that seem more popular and the only reason I came up with is money. My guess is one or more big dealers are ready to do a major promotion of slabbed euros.

So .. just ship them over and I'll get them entombed in plastic right away. Then we can both retire to the Bahamas on the profits from the sale of our super-rare, POP-TOP mega cool pocket change. imageimage

It's not a huge or unmanageable set , yet. Give it time and all the combos will grow. I like these in flips though, the coins accumulate fast. image

I'll need your shipping address.image If you think you can snag us some land in the Bahamas, would you please try to reserve a small peninsula for me???
