Help with NGC designation please...

I have a war nickel graded MS-66W. I've searched the NGC website and found no reference to the "W". What does it mean?

White, they don't use it any more.

They used it for about a year - turned out that it didn't mean a whole lot to the coin buyers so they discontinued it.

There are some with both the W designation and * .

I think they were using the W and a T a few years ago. T was for nicely toned. W for white. I guess they stopped after a while and then came up with the *. Rather than saying what the coin is (toned or white) they now are saying the * coin has good eye appeal in their opinion.

The W,T were introduced shortly before the * but they were both in use at the same time. (I have one that has both the W and * designations on it.) They first appeared on the NGC 7 slab which was used from 1997 - Aug 2000 & Oct 2000 to Sept 2001. I don't know when they began during that period. I'm not sure whether the W & T designators lasted til NGC 8 (Sept 2000) or not. I am pretty sure they were discontinued before NGC 9 came out

I have a couple of coins with the W designation. I had tons of them but put them all on eBay when I first got them.
