1945 Merc

Is there any premium for a 1945 Merc that would have full bands except for slight weakness in the center bands which makes those incomplete? Any thoughts?

I think the center band is the band that really determines full bandedness of the mercs. So you're in the same position as other coins just shy of FBL, FT, FH, and so on. It's certainly an asset to the coin, and the coin may be viable at the higher end of the normal price range for that particular date and condition, but it's nothing to get too excited about, especially with common dates.

From what I have heard, if you can get a 1945 Merc dime into PCGS or NGC FB plastic, you've made yourself one valuable coin. Not that I know anything about this firsthand.

There is ongoing controversy about this, but the reality of the market in conjunction with the blatant unavailability of full split band 1945 examples , has led to premiums being charged for 1945 examples with bands above 2/3 split. The highest premiums being paid for those examples in the 80-95% split range. Those examples that are above 95%, or just "miss" examples, are being perpetually resubmitted in the hopes of the lofty FB designation. In some cases the grading fees being spent are in excess of the premiums for the actual coin. Be careful in purchasing examples without a sight seen inspection or a nice scan, as many low end FSB examples or 'just made' examples are abundant. I hope this has been helpful.

I think the last one I sold like this on ebay I got something like $50 for it and it was raw and MS65-ish. I started a thread about this same subject on that coin. mike
