Purty sure that coin shops will be lumped with pawn shops (as legislation already designates bullion dealers as being in the category)

I see it as a veiled attempt for the government to find hidden taxes owed by its citizens. Its just a matter of time until the scope and extent of this Act is exceeded and it is repealed in starts and fits. The only question is how much damage will be down to innocent people in the mean time.
I believe the Supreme Court is looking into the ability to capture and hold "prisoners of war" in our military base in Cuba. It's about time!

Russ -- it's real easy to take a moralistic stand and again "play" upon emotions, but go do some research. Do you really think, that we (meaning our government) didn't have any clues as to what was about to happen? Go read some of the hearing reports of the investigation. Unlike Kennedy's murder, there was no "Warren Commission" on this one. It was handled much better.
Go ask the families of those killed aboard the USS Arizona if the United States knew there would be a "surprise" attack on Pearl Harbor? We did and we left the fleet in because we didn't think the damage would be that severe. However, most if not all of our aircraft carriers were out to sea, because we knew we would really need them in the impending war.
Perhaps we never thought that there would be 4 planes with 3 different targets or that the damage actually inflicted could be possible. Perhaps we assumed and thought some collateral damage was allowable. I see the "War on Terrorism" as the new "War on Communism or the recently dead "War on Drugs" (which we failed miserable at, but it did alot for quite a bit of defense spending). If you think otherwise I would imagine you are rather naive. Nothing happens by accident, and there's NO WAY a group of "terrorist" could train in the United States for years and pull off an attack like that without any indication or knowledge of the US government.
While in college I worked for a gentleman most of you watched discuss the attack on ABC, CBS, CNN ect. He was the former head of the anti-terrorism task force for the State Department. There is little that occurs in this world without us knowing about it. There is a listening station at the Vice President's residence in Washington DC that can hear just about everything. And yes we do have satellites that can read newspaper print from orbit.
Ask yourself why we can't find the 2 biggest baddest guys on the planet, perhaps because it doesn't serve a purpose to do so yet.

As was our practice we whipped out the form (1083 I think) for taxpayer ID.
They filled it out without batting an eye. The USUAL reaction from MOST customers was "WHADDYA NEED THIS FOR" or "I AIN'T FILLIN OUT NO FORMS." Or some such.
Since we had TWO clean audits (one state, one fed) I never messed with the folks who wanted to skip steps. It cost us some bizz but when I see stuff like this BS, I sleep much better.
Strangely, I spoke to another dealer in town who had the same thing with a couple of the same description on same quantity on same day.

(note: I read www.kitco.com a LOT ......it's a gold site......and there is lots and lots of talk lately of different plans to secure contents of safe deposit boxes in case of national emergency.)
A national emergency in a country with as HUGE a debt as we are amassing would (I feel) give "them" all the reason they need to do some snooping and asking.
Just be aware.
They ain't gonna catch Osama OR Saddam until the stock market takes its long overdue swoon on ONE day.

What I think is that if the previous administration had availed itself of one of the several opportunities it had to eliminate this specific threat, 9/11 never would have happened. To now condemn of the attempts to clean up a mess created by years of ignoring the problem, while at the same time failing to note the true genesis of that problem, is hypocritical.
That said, I disagree with much of what has been done, and I disagree with many of the actions taken by the Bush administration. Personally, he is too liberal for my tastes. However, to call the threat "imaginary" is the worst possible insult to the thousands upon thousands of victims of terrorism worldwide.

You bought the party line hook, line and sinker. That's exactly the stance that Bush's administration took and tried to blame Clinton for the mess. Who is he going to blame for the Iraq mess his administration is causing?
Why isn't HE cleaning up the situation in Iraq? It's becoming nothing more then a quagmire for this administration and for us. I have no doubt that our continued involvement and occupation of Iraq will only lead to greater anti-US sentiment around the world. Thus causing even further distrust of Bush's policies. Now it seems as though he's ready to enter Iran under a "nuclear proliferation" theory. First WMD and now NPT. What's next?

Of course, this has never happened before in the history of our country -- The USS Maine, Pearl Harbor, the Tonkan Gulf, Kennedy assasination are only a recent few. It's not conspiritorial, its public opinion that I am referring to. Argue with history, not me.

No, I'm dealing with the facts. Or, have you conveniently forgotten about the eight seperate terrorist attacks launched against various US entities while Clinton was in office? Forgotten about the lame, ineffective or non-existent responses to those attacks? Forgotten that the man most responsible, Osama Bin Laden, was offered to the Clinton administration on a silver platter? Had Clinton simply availed himself of that last opportunity, there would be 3000 fewer dead human beings right now.
You might want to make at least a minimal attempt to set aside your obvious bias while debating the issue.

Hate to tell'ya, I'm a Republican and I hated Clinton, still do and hate his wife even more. I have no bias except for stupidity. This administration is as stupid or more so then its predecessor. It's amazing what the American people are willing to swallow. How we have suspended our disbelief is astonishing. That's the problem. And by the way, I never brought politics into the debate.
And as for Claus -- I named facts in regards to the USS Maine, the Tonkan Gulf & Pearl Harbor. Where is your cohesive and cogent argument against those United States governmental transgressions? History is solidily in my corner. The US government has utilized fabricated facts as well as sat back and watched as US citizens and military were killed in order to further it's own causes and agendas. This isn't some conspiracy theory, go read a history book, its all true.
Is it just possible that same thing occurred in regards to the 9/11 attacks and Iraq? Were's the focus on terrorism? I see us sitting and occupying a oil producing nation, not hunting terrorists. No WMD, what a shock. When was the last time Bush mentioned Osama's name? Can ANYONE tell me when the last time Bush mentioned the hunt for Osama?
If you all believe the propaganda on the "War on Terrorism" -- who's winning it? What's happening with it? Have any other members of Osama's club been caught lately?

I'm sorry, I apologize. I didn't realize you didn't know the history or the facts surrounding these occurrences in American history. I just assumed everyone did. My bad. However, before you make certain statements about my "facts and theories", perhaps you should do a little research.

The Internal Revenue Service has sharply increased audits of car dealers. Accountants and lawyers say two factors are behind the trend: the anti-terrorist USA PATRIOT Act, and a campaign against tax fraud that has uncovered federal cash-reporting violations at auto dealership
The gist of the article in the most important publication in the automobile industry is that the IRS is using the Patriot Act to gain access to dealer books without probable cause of criminal activity or a warrant, and once inside the dealership, looking for other violations (unreported vehicle use, etc.). Audits are up 6% this year.
While I'm thinking about it, I should also note that there is a list of names all of us are required to search before conducting business with them. The list of Names (PDF)

This would be nothing new. The IRS doesn't need any specific law to violate 4th Amendment protections. They've been running rough shod over that right since inception. For some strange reason they are the one branch of government that has always had carte blanche exception to do as they please, without regard for individual rights. I've always wondered why their practices have never been successfully challenged before the Supreme Court.

Fair enough, and very true! I extend my apologetic hand and wish to end the debate. Sorry I didn't mean anything personal by this thread. Thanks Elwood for reminding me I took it too far off course.
I just strongly believe in the Bill of Rights and Constitution and have taken an oath to uphold it. (Yes, lawyers do take oaths to uphold the Constitution.) And when I see it being trampled, I find it abhorrent.
