need advice from the pros.

if one had a large amount of small cents, nickels, and dimes from let's say 1920-1970, nothing worth much and poor condition, would you cash them in and purchase one or two coins that had some value

Yes, for any pre-'59 cents,, silver nickels, and 'pre-65 dimes, I'd sell them for the appropriate amount above face, cash in the rest, and buy one or two coins.... been there, done thatimage

I would. In fact, I did. I turned about 500 decent but not great coins purchased in the 1970s into a nice collection of 40 - 50 great coins and have since gone nuts and added to / upgraded and embellished that.

It just doesn't make a lot of sense to me to hold onto a bunch of mediocre stuff that is readily available anywhere at anytime, that isn't rare or particular interesting, that is unlikely to appreciate and that is therefore not much of a collection OR investment.

    Just my opinion.

Ditto. A few years ago, I traded in a whole bunch of "crap" for a few great coins. I figured, what good is having boxes of stuff that I couldn't care less about. I might as well get some coins I really like.

Don't hesitate to clear some dead weight out of your collection to make room for the good stuff!

Generally common coins in common condition are not going to much appreciate
and have never done very well historically. Times are much different now than
they've been in the past and now some of these do have some potential. Spe-
cifically the common buffalo nickels have been increasing recently and could con-
    tinue for some time.

There are large numbers of returning collectors and newbies who are putting a
lot of pressure on the supplies of some coins. Keep an eye on the market and
you'll see some big changes developing. Generally the old truths will still stay
correct and common coins in common conditions will languish, but there will be
some reassessment of just what is common as time goes on.

When one gets too many coins the collection becomes an accumulation. It is very good to sell the coins with less meaning to buy fewer coins with greater value, quality or meaning.
